ON THE DEFINITION OF THE PARABLE. rPHOSE writers who have had occasion to define a parable--have found it no easy task to give such a satisfying definition as should omit none of its distinctive marks, and yet at the same time should include nothing that was superfluous and merely accidental. Rather than attempt to add another to the many definitions already given, f I will seek to note Hapafidrj, from irapafiaWfiv, projicere, objicere, i. e. rl run, to put forth one thing before or beside another; and it is assumed, when wapaBofi is used for parable, though not necessarily included in the word, that the purpose for which they are set side by side is, that they may be compared one with the other; thus Polyb., L i. c. 2. § 2, Tiapaj3orj Kai aiyKpurit. That this is not necessarily included is clear, not only from the derivation, but from the fact that the word itself and the whole family of cognate words, as irapd/SoXos, irapafioas, parabolanus, are used in altogether a different sense, yet one growing out of the same root, in which the notion of putting forth is retained, but it is no longer for the purpose of comparison, which is only the accident, not of the essence of the word. Thus irapa/SoXoy, qui objicit se prsesentissimo vita; periculo, one who exposes his life, as those at Alexandria called parabolani, because they buried infected corpses.--The chief Latin writers are not agreed in their rendering of the word. Cicero (De Inv. CHAPTER VI. THE APOLOGETIC WORTH OF THE MIRACLES. A Most interesting question remains: namely this, What is the place which those who are occupied with marshalling and presenting the evidences of Revelation should give to the miracles ? what is the service which they may render here ? The circumstances have been already noticed which were sufficient to hinder them from taking a very prominent place in the early Apologies for Christianity*. The Christian miracles had not sufficiently extricated themselves from the multitude of false miracles,--nor was Christ sufficiently discerned and distinguished from the various wonder-workers of his own and of past ages ; so that, even if men had admitted his miracles to be true and godlike, they would have been hardly nearer to the acknowledging of Christianity as the one faith, or of him as " the way, the truth, and the life." But a different and far more important position has been assigned them in later times, especially during the last two hundred years; and the tone and temper of modern theology abundantly explains the greater prominence, sometimes, I believe, the undue, because the exclusive, prominence, which in this period they have assumed. The apologetic literature of this time, partook, as was inevitable, in the general depression of all its theology. There is no one, I think, who would now be satisfied with the general tone and spirit in which the defences of the faith, written during the two last centuries, and beginning with the memorable work of â€ Thus, in the Apologies of Justin Martyr, they are scarcely made use of at all. This work was first accomplished in 1854 by Trench, an Anglican archbishop at Dublin. It has been in print nearly all the time since, because the good archbishop had a genius for understanding Biblical Greek, and the proper synonyms of the same. Though old, it is not lacking in style. And he was able to express himself in a way that is easily understood. In this case the old may be better than what is coming out in our day. There are one hundred and seventeen sets of synonyms given and compared. A thorough discussion is given of the meaning and use of each Greek word. Then a comparison between them shows why they are used in various parts of the Holy Scriptures. The Greek of the Septuagint is used to bring the Old Testament words into the comparisons, thus throwing much light on the Hebrew words in many places. There is no question that the whole of the book will strain the mind of most people. For Trench was a very learned man, with knowledge of dozens and dozens of Greek authors and their use of the words he highlights in this book. Besides, he knew the Latins as well. Because of this there are many paragraphs of both Greek and Latin on page after page. Nevertheless, there is exquisite knowledge to be attained by anyone interested in studying Bible words, what they mean, how they differ from others, etc. Besides, there are many illustrations of how Biblical words have been elevated from the Greek uses and meaning. For instance, the word ekklhsiva, which means assembly (though commonly translated as ''church'' in today's Bibles). Trench says that we have three distinct stages of meaning - the heathen, the Jewish, and the Christian. The heathen use was for a lawful assembly that was summoned for the transaction of public affairs. ekklhsiva was ennobled by being elevated to be used in the Bible only as an assembly met for worship of Jesus Christ.
