In The Liberation of Jerusalem (1581), Torquato Tasso set out to write an epic to rival the Iliad and the Aeneid. Unlike his predecessors, he took his subject not from myth but from history: the Christian capture of Jerusalem during the First Crusade. The siege of the city is played out alongside a magical romance of love and sacrifice, in which the Christian knight Rinaldo succumbs to the charms of the pagan sorceress Armida, and the warrior maiden Clorinda inspires a fatal passion in the Christian Tancred. Tasso's masterpiece left its mark on writers from Spenser and Milton to Goethe and Byron, and inspired countless painters and composers. This is the first English translation in modern times that faithfully reflects both the sense and the verse form of the original. Max Wickert's fine rendering is introduced by Mark Davie, who places Tasso's poem in it troubled historical context and sheds light on its narrative framework and historical accuracy as well as its reception and influence. Ralph Nash, in his approach to Gerusalemme Liberata, concluded that a close, fluent translation in prose of Tasso's epic would offer the most successful rendering of this important chivalric romance. In addition to conveying the imagery more accurately, a prose translation avoids deforming or modifying the text by forcing it into a poetic format. As a result, Nash has given the general reader and the student a fluent, accurate English version of Tasso's great narrative of the first crusade. Nash's introduction aids the reader in understanding the place of the poem in the corpus of Renaissance literature. Annotations and a glossary clarify the numerous historical, geographical, and mythological references.

The Genesis of Tasso's Narrative Theory offers translations of theoretical works by the 16th-century Italian poet Torquato Tasso that have been unavailable in English heretofore and presents them together with a critical apparatus that puts these prose works in context with Tasso's major poetry. The translations are an excellent addition to the body of literature on romance and epic poetry during the Italian Renaissance.
Lawrence Rhu shows the relationship of young Tasso's narrative theory to his great epic, Gerusalemme liberata, and the relationship of both to 16th-century poetics and religious dogmatism. He also illustrates the connection between Tasso's writings and those of his immediate precursors, especially Ariosto, and to the English masters of epic, Spenser and Milton.
