The British Museum's collections contain over 200 paintings of the Ukiyo-e school, including works by masters such as Utamaro, Hokusai and Moronobu. All are reproduced in color in this book, with details of signatures and seals, biographies of the artists and an annotated bibliography. In the two introductory essays Timothy Clark discusses the development and aesthetic qualities of Ukiyo-e painting and examines problems of authenticity. Kitagawa Utamaro (?1754-1806) is the pivotal artist of the Ukiyo-e school. His sensuous and sharp-witted portrayal of women in all walks of life both celebrate and comment on those of the "Floating World". Discovered early in his career, Utamaro was soon collaborating with the leading writers of the 1790s. The culmination was a sequence of deluxe poetry anthologies, which he illustrated in colour woodblock with figure and nature subjects and erotic scenes. In the 1790s Utamaro transformed the style of Ukiyo-e art with his prolific ouput of print series: often portraits in the new bust and half-length formats. High-ranked courtesans, lovers from literature and ordinary domestic scenes - all these themes are explored. Boastful of his talents, Utamaro finally came into collision with the feudal authorities, suffering house arrest that accelerated his artistic decline and led to his death. Having seen the show at Japan Society NYC, I can say that this book captures the essence and more. It's a huge catalog and high quality. Great reference and/or coffee table book. Color reproduction is excellent. My only complaint is minor: I felt that the book could have been the same size as the actual woodblock prints. As it is, the scans are smaller than the originals and the details are much larger. I imagine that it may have been too heavy and cost prohibitive to make it actual size. A few select fold-outs of the triptychs would have been nice as well! Also check out the hi-res digital prints from the show available through Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Highly recommended.

In early modern Japan, 1600 1900, thousands of sexually explicit paintings, prints, and illustrated books with texts were produced, known as spring pictures (shunga). This catalogue of a major exhibition at the British Museum marks the culmination of a substantial international research project and aims to answer some key questions about what shunga was and why it was produced.
