Bloody Harlan: The United Mine Workers of America in Harlan County, Kentucky, 1931-1941

This book details the classic saga of conflict between labor and management occasioned by the many attempts of the United Mine Workers of America to organize Harlan's miners during the New Deal Era. Harlan County, Kentucky was the last major anti-union bastion in the Appalachian coalfield. The story of the organization of the county's coal mines by the United Mine Workers of America is largely confined to the decade of the 1930's. The most serious union campaigns occurred in 1931-32, after the passage of the National Industrial Recovery Act in 1933, and following the enactment of the National Labor Relations Act in 1935. Finally, after almost a decade of labor strife, the Federal Government intervened following the Supreme Court decision in the case, N.L.R.B. v. Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation (301 U.S.1), on April 12, 1937 which upheld the National Labor Relations Act. After a year of federal inquiry, culminating in the Mary Helen conspiracy trial at London, Kentucky, Harlan's miners could join the UMWA openly and without fear of recrimination.

From that somewhat inauspicious start, my journey as a teacher took me to a three-room school as the teacher-principal in Bell County, Kentucky, to another one-room school in Bell County, to Tucker High School in Georgia, to Georgia Military Academy, ending at Augusta College in Augusta, Georgia, as a professor of United States history. Of course, there were several stops along the way: a two-year hitch in the United States Army, a stint of several months as a blue-collar laborer, and a brief sojourn in retailing. This book is an account of the career of an educator who loved to teach and who loved all his pupils and students.

A BBC documentary series showed a giant, extinct, supposedly carnivorous bird catching and eating a tiny alleged ancestor of the horse. “This is a world where birds eat horses”, intoned the Oscar-nominated actor, voicing the narration. The evidence for this? One fossil gastornis (a giant bird), six fossil propalaeotheria (supposed horse ancestors) and one fossil bunch of grapes (that caused the “horses” to get tipsy, and lose concentration) all found together in one place. From this find was woven a fascinating story, which was then presented, as if it were a wildlife documentary. Where Birds Eat Horses: The Language of Evolution shows that evidence for evolution does not reside in observational science, but in the clever use of language. The book assists the reader in spotting such unscientific or pseudo-scientific language in textbooks, popular science articles, and documentary films. Without needing a degree in science, the actual science in such media can still easily be filtered from the use of fuzzy words, magic words and false presuppositions. It is shown that the acceptance of the truth of Genesis is a much better foundation for science than the mythologies of evolution.
