On October 10, the mulatto general, Clervaux, suddenly revolted and carried with him all his troops. This spectacular desertion was another result of the reactionary legislation in Prance and Richepanse's measures in Guadeloupe. In July, Napoleon had formally reestablished all the mulatto discriminations of the Old Regime,1 while at about the same time Richepanse had restored the color line for Guadeloupe and its dependencies. This enraged the mulattoes of San Domingo as much as the restoration of slavery had infuriated the negroes, and since caste feeling was much stronger among the colored people than among the blacks, the mulatto leaders soon initiated decisive action. Their plans had been so quietly laid that this mulatto defection took the French army by surprise and exposed it to the danger of absolute destruction. Up to this time the colored people had been the negroes' most savage opponents, and Clervaux's mulatto troops had made up the greater part of the garrison of Le Cap itself. For the moment the city was defended by only a few hundred French troops and the white National Guard numbering one thousand infantry and two hundred horse. All this was well known to Clervaux, and two days after his desertion he made a bold attempt to storm Le Cap by a sudden assault. Backed by fully ten thousand negro rebels his mulatto troops flung themselves upon the city lines, but the whites defended themselves with superb courage and forced the baffled Clervaux to draw off with great loss.2 Le Cap was saved, but the mulatto revolt decided the black generals' attitude. A leading American journalist travels to Nazi Germany in December 1939, arriving in wartime Germany where all the lights are blacked out in preparation for an English or French bombing campaign. T. Lothrop Stoddard's provocatively-titled book refers to the eerie experience he felt of first encountering this total blackout. Into the Darkness was the product of an assignment by the North American Newspaper Alliance company in which Stoddard was detailed to report on wartime conditions in Nazi Germany-at a time before the US became involved in the war. Stoddard was not unknown in Germany. Due to his leading work in the areas of racial history, racial science and eugenic in America, he was granted unprecedented access to the inner workings of the National Socialist government and provided the first-and possibly only-accurate, unbiased account of German racial policy ever written by a non-German writer. Stoddard was granted personal interviews with Adolf Hitler, Joseph Goebbels, Heinrich Himmler, Robert Ley, Wilhelm Frick, Walter Darré, Eugen Fischer, Fritz Lenz, and Hans F. K. Günther, and many other Nazi leaders. In addition, Stoddard was allowed to attend the workings of a German Eugenics court-the only such account ever to reach the rest of Europe and America. Among the many other insights in this unique book: - The trials and tribulations of civilian Germans at war; - The real attitude of Germans to the war; - The German Labor Front, the Winter Help, the Hitler Youth and women in the Third Reich; - The economic policies of the Third Reich; - The treatment of Jews inside Nazi Germany; and much more besides. Stoddard was a renowned and well-respected journalist when he made this trip and subsequent report, because it recounts accurately the events of the time, his name-not to mention his report-has all but disappeared from today's "official" history concerning that period. Lothrop Stoddard's epic 1921 work did not refer to a belief that whites should rule over other races, but merely that, as he put it, a man who in 1914 looked at a world map "got one fundamental impression: the overwhelming preponderance of the white race in the ordering of the world's affairs." It was this dominance, Stoddard said, which was coming to an end because of the massive demographic swings which he foresaw over the coming decades-just one of the many accurate predictions made in this book which have allowed it to stand the test of time. Starting with an overview of the different races of the world and their traditional homelands, Stoddard pointed out how their technological backwardness allowed what he called the "white flood" to colonize all four corners of the earth. However, he continued, the transfer of European technology, learning and know-how to the nonwhite races of the earth had now empowered them, and as a result, the era of white domination was surely coming to an end. He warned that any policy which promoted open borders, and unrestricted immigration, would lead to the final and irreparable destruction of any European nation. He also foretold that the massive population boom of the Third World would sooner or later come pressing against all white nations' borders-driven forward by the Third World's inability to maintain order and progress, and the offer of a better life under white rule which they claimed to dislike so much. He was also one of the few to recognize the growing threat of militant Islam, and warned in this book that it would become a major world force. Stoddard argued that the only way to avoid a worldwide racial catastrophe was to educate people on the issue of race and the need for racial improvement through eugenics, and for whites to abandon the concept of "white supremacy" completely.
