Prehistoric Hunter Gathers: the Emergence of Cultural Complexity

Archaeologists separate hunter-gatherers into two camps "simple" and "complex." Recently there has been heated discourse as to the "nature" of complex hunter-gatherer societies. While some say it is a transitional phase between foragers and agriculturist, others argue it is an independent phe- nomenon. The classic view of hunter-gatherers is that they are small, mobile, and egalitarian. In general hunter-gatherer societies are described as having a high level of individual autonomy in which every individual has equal access to resources. One of the most significant aspects of complex hunter- gatherers is their increase in intensification of foodstuffs, meaning an in- crease in productivity and production due to technological advances, food storage, and the diversification of resources exploited. The definition of cultural complexity generally refers to aspects of a cul- ture that have the greatest effects on material or archaeological remains. These include prestige items, monumental construction, and larger settle- ments, which suggest social and economic inequalities, and a centralization of political power. Increasing complexity has been associ- ated with a variety of factors including, environment, resource availability, subsistence, sedentasism, technology, storage, population, exchange, conflict, and cooperation.

Muge 150th: The 150th Anniversary of the Discovery of Mesolithic Shellmiddens is organised into two volumes. While the first volume focused on Mesolithic finds in both the Muge and Sado valleys, this book, with a total of twenty-two chapters, brings together a series of papers on the Mesolithic period and its transition to the Neolithic all over Europe, including Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Servia, Sweden and the UK, as well as a series of general papers discussing methodological or theoretical aspects of the Mesolithic. In addition, the closing chapters of this volume venture outside the realm of the European Mesolithic-Neolithic world, presenting case studies on shell middens from both the Patagonia and the Red Sea.

The archaeological site of Smakkerup Huse is located at the headwaters of a former fjord known as the Saltbaek Vig on the northwest coast of the island of Zealand, Denmark. Excavations took place in 1989 and again from 1995 to 1997 by a team of Danish and American archaeologists. The site is important for a number of reasons, including the 1000-year record of cultural deposits and the preservation of abundant subsistence remains and wooden objects. Smakkerup Huse documents some of the oldest domestic cattle in Denmark and a new artifact type, a painted pebble, from the Mesolithic. While the settlement area of the site on land had been eroded, the waterlain deposits adjacent to the site preserved a submerged midden and an in situ fishing and boat landing area. The report on the site includes background on the Mesolithic of Southern Scandinavia, a history of research at the site, the geology and topography of the site and its environment, the layout and sequence of the excavations, stratigraphy, the finds, dating, interpretation and significance.
