The wartime diary of Walbrook D. Swank includes war news day by day, plus events in the manpower and war production activities of the Army Air Corps. Thirty cents of every war dollar was spent in support of American air power which provided the key to the Allied Victory in World War II. Diary items include relations with Generals Jimmy Doolittle; Elliott Roosevelt, the president's son; Charles A. Lindbergh; Jimmy Stewart, the movie actor; William Knudsen, head of production, U.S. Army, formerly head of the war production board; and William E. Farthing, Commanding Officer, Hickam Field, Hawaii, during the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. He recalls having luncheon with the warden of Alcatraz and touring the prison. He tells about returning the remains of an officer, killed in the explosion of his aircraft, to his home and participating in the funeral. He recounts the perils of a nighttime hotel fire, the catching of an international oil swindler, and many other intriguing events.

A., Thirteenth Virginia Infantry Regiment, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A. This unit participated in more than seventy various types of engagements during his career - from Manassas to Appomattox. Trying to understand the men in gray and the reasons that led to the War Between the States have been a favorite for historians and novices when reviewing this period of our history. Reverend Robert Catlett Cave wrote The Men in Gray in 1911 to help explain the Southern viewpoint on the conflict. At the unveiling of the monument to the Confederate Sailors and Soldiers of the Southern Confederacy in Libby Park, Richmond, Virginia, his oration sparked a controversy that led to the writing and explanation contained in this book.

John Billy Peyton’s daily diary paints a vivid picture of life on the home front in Rapidan, Virginia, during the War Between the States. As the postmaster he had a close relationship with the railroads, which provided him with access to the news and military actions of the opposing forces. The operations of the railroad and the bridge over the Rapidan River were essential to the movement of troops, arms, supplies, and equipment. Peyton bought and sold quantities of sugar, apples, and tobacco. His home was used by many guests from all walks of life. From wounded soldiers and generals to doctors, lawyers, trainmen, and travelers, he was the center of local affairs in the midst of the killing fields of battle. 
Peyton, physically unable to join the army, remained in Rapidan, which was a strategic location and community on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad and the Rapidan River. Within the triangle of Manassas, Orange Court House, and Fredericksburg, the Raccoon and Somerville fords would be used time and again by elements of the Union and Confederate armies. Early November 1863 was the last time Robert E. Lee would move up to or across the Rapidan River. When the armies moved away from Spotsylvania on May 21, 1864, they left behind the bloodiest ground in North American history.
