<p>The Indian fascination with gold has a history stretching back to the Indus Valley civilization and can sometimes assume almost mystic proportions; despite this, surprisingly little has been written about it. This book examines a wide range of gold ornaments dating from the second century BC to the present day, and includes coins as well as objets d' art. It also discuss the various historical and stylistic influences on gold-crafting and the many techniques that made it such a sophisticated art in the Indian subcontinent. All the pieces, many of which have never been exhibited before, are illustrated in colour. Dr. James Harle provides the introductory essay and catagloue entries on early Indian gold, Susan Stronge the section on jewelry of the Mughal period and Dr. Nima Smith writes on twentieth-century jewelry and Indian attitudes to gold. The objects are drawn from the collections of Her Majesty the Queen, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, the Pitt Rivers and Ashmolean Museums, and a number of private collections.</p>

This work provides a detailed survey of the Victoria and Albert's renowned collection of painting from the great age of the Mughals, covering the reigns of three emperors: Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. The book traces the evolution of the art of the Mughals. Their land, which they called Hindustan, was a conquered one, their language was Persian; they employed Hindu and Muslim artists and commissioned books and paintings with themes drawn from these cultural and religious traditions, and from Europe. This complex framework produced some of the finest court paintings ever seen in the Indian subcontinent. The book includes pictures from the first major project of the new Mughal studio, the epic adventures of the Muslim hero, Hamza; dramatic battles and episodes from the life of the emperor Akbar, the Akbarnama; and a remarkable series of portraits of the emperors, their sons, and leading members of the court from the early 17th century. Also included are portraits and studies of wild life by masters such as Mansur and Manohar. These were preserved in albums for Jahangir and Shah Jahan, Shah Jahan's artists adding exquisite floral borders, and both rulers vividly emphasising their ownership by writing occasional comments on the pages. A rich and sophisticated culture is mirrored in the paintings and explored in the accompanying text; the result is a book of both scholarship and beauty.

Tipu s Tiger is one of the Victoria and Albert Museum's most enduringly famous and fascinating objects. It was made for Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore who was killed by the British in 1799 during the final onslaught on his island capital, Seringapatam. After the victory, his treasury was seized and its precious contents rapidly divided between the soldiers of the East India Company army. The spectacular wooden tiger survived, however. Discovered in the music room of the palace, it was shipped to the company's new museum in London in 1800. This accessible and beautiful book tells the story of the tiger's travels from India to the V&A, showing how it has inspired artists and authors, and frightened or entertained the public since its first appearance in England. It also discusses the intriguing meanings of the many tiger motifs on Tipu Sultan's personal commissions, from his jewelled golden throne and idiosyncratic weapons to the emblematic wooden semi-automaton.
