In Rapunzel's Short Hair, Richardson revisits myths and fairy tales, giving voice to the women characters in their positions as lovers, mothers, creators and warriors. Here, Cinderella imagines how much better her marriage might fit her had the fateful shoes been made of fur and not glass. Bluebeard's next wife/victim feels both enticed and repelled by the key to her husband's forbidden room. Eurydice suggests the depths to which a lone woman's mind, uncluttered by mundane details, might plumb. And Gretel depicts, chillingly, the participation of some women in the overthrow of the matriarchal religion. Overall, Rapunzel's Short Hair takes a new look at the old tales for today's audience.    Braving the Flood addresses lovers and friends, each depicted as a certain object or occupation. In Climber, a disabled woman sets herself the goal of ascending the mountain that has shrugged her off. In Dormant, a volatile woman becomes the destructive Mount Saint Helens. Empty Boat offers not only a suspicious method of suicide but a blessing of space in an otherwise cramped world. Overall, Braving the Flood illustrates the fluctuations, both life affirming and emotionally challenging, in our relationships with friends and lovers.

<p>Susan is regarded as a witty, lyrical and inventive poet, who deals with social and environmental issues as well as with the more intimate and personal. Her first full-length collection, Creatures of the Intertidal Zone, has just been published by Cinnamon Press and was launched at the Norwegian Church Arts Centre in Cardiff. The book was written after Susan was awarded a Churchill Travel Fellowship to journey through Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland in the footsteps of Gudrid, an intrepid tenth/eleventh century female Viking.</p>
