<p>Susan Hemmings, editor of this collection, has drawn together a diverse collection of older women, and encouraged eighteen of them to write; this includes two who were in retirement, several who were black and had experience in immigration into this country, one or two who had been Jewish refugees from Hitler, and British women from all sorts of background.White middle-class dominance of the Women's Movement in the 1960s and early 1970s left little space for the working class, black, or older women to experience their own oppression; this book provides such a space, being about late middle and early old age as experienced from the inside in a variety of circumstances, and this is a contribution to a neglected area of social gerontology.</p>
