<p>Its proximity to the ocean will always be the most significant part of Groton’s history. The 19th-century shipyards along the Mystic River produced some of the country’s finest clipper ships. Land along the Thames River today remains home to the country’s oldest submarine base and to the General Dynamics Electric Boat corporation, where the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus, was built and first set sail. Today Nautilus is permanently berthed along the Thames in Groton at the Submarine Force Library and Museum. But Groton is a typical New England town as well. Within this volume, the town’s evolution is traced from its agrarian roots in Center Groton and along the plains of Poquonnock to the devastation wrought by the Great Hurricane of 1938. It recalls some of Groton’s great citizens, including two Civil War Medal of Honor winners and two Boston Marathon champions.</p>

Established in 1705, the town of Groton is geographically located between the Thames and Mystic Rivers in the southeastern corner of Connecticut. The town is comprised of eight separate subdivision communities that are referred to as fire districts. Groton is also the home to a large naval submarine base, a small general aviation airport, and several major industrial facilities, including the Electric Boat Corporation and Pfizer, Inc. The Mystic fire district is recognized for its historical maritime museums and facilities and plays host to thousands of tourists each year. At the present time, Groton and Mystic are provided emergency services by 13 fire departments, three police departments, two ambulance associations, one paramedic response unit, and one central dispatch operation.

Boats and the sea have always been an important part of the history of Groton, known as the submarine capital of the world. It is home to a U.S. submarine base and to General Dynamics-Electric Boat. Electric Boat's prolific submarine construction in the 1940s helped America win World War II, and it was in Groton that the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, was built and launched. The village of Mystic, now a popular tourist destination, was home to the nineteenth-century shipyards that built the Andrew Jackson, the clipper ship that made the record-setting voyage between New York and San Francisco, and the Galena, the first oceangoing ironclad used by the Union navy during the Civil War.
