Aiming for the jugular of the American unconscious, the photographs of Los Angeles-based artist Charlie White, born in 1972, inspect the culture's fictions not with the raw lens of a Larry Clark, but with the directorially staged artifice of, say, Jeff Wall or Gregory Crewdson. American Minor delves into an important and ongoing theme in White's work--the American teen, and all that goes into its manufacture. Having approached this theme with an earlier project whose protagonist was a hairy, fragile doll named Joshua, here White tackles the taboos of nascent sexuality in the American teen girl--both the vulnerability of that sexuality as a topic and the ruthlessness with which it is exploited when it goes unexamined. Cataloging studio archives, film stills, animation stills and scripts, and using images culled from White's two-year study of one teenager, archives of magazine covers featuring iconic blonde models, stills from his first 35mm film and his photographic comparative study of teens and transgendered people, American Minor presents White's ongoing and never-before-seen studies of the American teen subject as both image and idea. American Minor is a bold excavation of the sociosexual forces that surround us all.

Berlin-based artist and musician Carsten Nicolai, born in 1965, is one of very few contemporary artists who convincingly work in the conflict zone between art, science and sound. Equally respected in the art world and the electronic music community, his works lay open the functional principles of codification, self-organization and perception so that the hand of the artist recedes and the classical notion of an oeuvre is put into question. Drawing on sounds available in our everyday environment, Nicolai creates soundscapes and installations redolent with clicks and blips from telephones, faxes and other technological detritus: he creates an elementary, universal language that eludes rationality, requesting instead to simply be perceived by the individual. This survey spans from Nicolai's well-known 1997 Documenta X project, "Infinity"--in which 72 short audio works were discretely embedded throughout Kassel's public spaces--to new pieces produced for a recent solo exhibition at Zurich's Haus Konstruktiv.

The works of the conceptual artist Jochem Hendricks (b. Schlüchtern 1959; lives and works in Frankfurt am Main) are both spectacular and precise. Hendricks, who implements his ingenious ideas using a variety of methods and media (video, photography, object, text), takes longings and fears that are familiar to all of us as his point of departure in order to comment on them in a manner that is critical, often humorous, and not seldom ironic. His works are characterized by an aesthetic that seems rather sober at first glance and that he deliberately uses to activate the viewer’s fantasies, memories, and ideas. For many years, his works have examined how knowledge, suppositions, and desires arise.
