Dahlia's fourteen year struggle with breast cancer inspired me to compose a short tribute to her courage and to her essence as a human being. I was never prepared for the utter despair and sense of loneliness which would envelop my being for the next four and one half years. She will always have a place in my memory and with each day another revelation about our life together surfaces. Sometimes I smile broadly, other times I am overwhelmed with great sadness. Perhaps this memoir might provide a bit of insight and comfort to others who have experienced a similar loss. Enjoy the moments you have with your family and disregard the trivial. Life has a habit of shaking our world and sometimes we don't take the time to walk slowly and smell the lilacs.

Early in 2010 Alex J. Stokas completed his first published work, "Dancing with Dahlia" a tribute in prose and poetry to his late wife, Dahlia, and her struggle with breast cancer. He holds advanced degrees in Literature, is a member of Dutchess County Council for the Arts, and loves to fly fish and travel. He maintains a residence in the Hudson Valley and is currently living in the southern United States while completing two additional collections of poetry, along with a novel. When recently asked to state his passion, Alex simply said, "All that life offers." He tries to live his life with gratitude and joy and believes that love is the greatest gift one can give and that faith lights his path.

A few years ago, after the great flood of 2011, I went on a four day tour of the Mississippi Delta accompanied by a good friend whom I will refer to as P.A. We left Memphis early one morning and headed down Highway 61 on our way to Greenville. As we traveled down 61, I recalled many years ago passing through this area and it had not changed. P.A. was my guide pointing out that Mississippi is a special place and much maligned by others.The hot sun, unpainted buildings, scattered shacks, small towns half empty, miles of cultivated fields, blues echoing in small towns, friendliest people on the planet, the arts, Oxford and Ole Miss, Blues venues like the Shack-Up Inn, and Ground Zero, and the unspoken sadness from a brutal past, all contributed to the poems in this brief collection.Some are from personal experience, or a response to life in the Delta, others from what I learned from P.A. It is my hope as you read each poem you will see the Delta with all its beauty, all its faults, and I hope someday experience its culture first hand before time brings change and the Delta fades into memory.

 He believes that children should be allowed to enjoy childhood and not be victimized by adults seeking to thrust them too soon into the agendas of adult society. Reading, playtime, kindness, sports, the arts, family values, and a respect for each other are important in creating a new generation with joyful memories of childhood.
 Alex. J. Stokas is the author of Dancing with Dahlia (A Memoir of his wife's courageous struggle with breast cancer), Lovescapes(collected poetry), and Blue Cobblestoned Street(Poems of Life). He currently resides in the southern United States.
