For forty years, Dietmar Steiner has been a leading voice in contemporary architecture. The founding director of the national architecture museum of Austria, the Architekturzentrum Wien; he has served as a consultant, on the jury of many prestigious architecture and urban design prizes, and as commissioner of the Austrian Pavilion at the International Architecture Exhibition of the 2002 Venice Biennale. Throughout his career, he has also lectured at universities and written widely as a scholar and critic. Capping a remarkable and still influential career, Steiner’s Diary is the most comprehensive collection of his writings to date, including some previously unpublished pieces. The book includes lectures; interviews; articles published in daily newspapers and magazines, and longer essays on a variety of topics. Steiner brings to his work a keen critical acumen that draws on decades of travel, research, and contact with renowned international architects, such as Rob Krier, Hermann Czech, Herzog & de Meuron, Rem Koolhaas, Lacaton + Vassal, Jon Jerde, Rural Studio, Wang Shu, and Alexander Brodsky. The Rohner harbor office building in Fussach, designed by B&E Baumschlager-Eberle, is a fascinating steel, glass and concrete configuration that appears to float in mid-air, echoing the form of a space capsule or a bird standing on one leg. Awkwardly elegant, the precisely designed building is composed of an eight-meter-long container-shaped shell of concrete that connects with the ground below by only a single slim footing. The interior of the shell is lined with larchwood paneling, creating an inner tension that dissolves at both ends of the building as it opens out into floor-to-ceiling glass windows that face Lake Constance at one end and the inland countryside at the other. This avian, spaceship-like building is nevertheless characterized by the very earthly features of an open structure, clear lines and uncompromising simplicity. First in the Archive Kunst Architectur series, this book features photographs by Eduard Hueber as well as plans and drawings by the distinguished Baumschlager-Eberle team.

A few years ago, on the edge of Langenlois, Austria, in the midst of rolling vineyards, three neighboring families faced a puzzle: recent technology had made their extensive cellars, some up to 900 years old, obsolete for wine production. What to do with the space? This unique meeting of traditional viniculture, ancient building technology and contemporary architecture and scholarship was the answer. It comprises a flagship entrance hall, multimedia exhibits on wine production throughout the now-linked cellars, and a hotel and art garden. Both the hotel and the slightly tilted cube of the welcome hall--it lists five degrees to the south, pulling, as the vines do, towards the sun--were designed by the acclaimed American architect Steven Holl, who was inspired by the geometry of the subterranean cellars. World of Wine Loisium is an absorbing document of the four-part project. It includes essays about the region, a collection of Holl's own views of the project (he is, as well as an architect, a widely published writer on architecture), and essays about the global phenomena of star architects and the developers who commission their work, putting the project into a larger perspective.

Since the mid-1980s, Austrian wine production has been explosive--garnering stellar reviews, awards and record export revenues. Contemporary architects have found the country ripe with opportunity for further experimentation in the field of wine architecture, which emerged in Napa Valley in the 1990s and became renowned with the 2001 Pritzker Prize-winning, Herzog and de Meuron-designed Dominus Winery (deemed "a combination of sensorial and intellectual pleasure" by Pritzker judge Jorge Silvetti). This publication presents a selection of nearly 70 projects in Lower Austria, Burgenland and Styria, and discusses how the combination of ground-breaking architecture--like the striking silver façade of Steven Holl-designed Loisium winery in Langenlois--and emerging wineries have been changing the face of the Austrian countryside for the past two decades. As Martin Rauchbauer, Deputy Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum, has observed, "The quality of wine architecture in Austria is seen as more than a transitory phenomenon. Wine Architecture: The Winery Boom

An overview of the built work of architect Steven Holl, Idea and Phenomena focuses on the sculptural expression inherent in his designs, material, composition, and use of light. Apparent in such projects as his Makuhari Housing in Chiba, Japan, where he designed a new city block on dredged fill at the rim of Tokyo Bay, Holl has devoted over 20 years of his professional life to exploring the use of movable walls for creating variety and what he calls "spaces for individual life." Even more essential to his oeuvre is what critic Herbert Muschamp has described as its "astonishing sculptural presence," created from the "strikingly assured interplay between windows and walls, curves and grids, voids and planes." In his fine-fibered use of materials, Holl employs his principle of "the stone and the feather," juxtaposing thin sheets of zinc roofing with rough concrete walls along knife-edged junctures. The results, as Idea and Phenomena clearly shows, from the first sketch to the final construction, are buildings alert to emotional needs, the spiritual properties of space, and the specifics of their own surroundings.
