British Iron Age swords and scabbards are here catalogued in detail for the first time. They are grouped on the basis of typologies of components and are discussed with special reference to their decoration, context and chronology. Artefact studies have been neglected for many years, and this subject was last tackled in a paper published in 1950. Since then, the material available for study has tripled, from 93 to 274 items, and new archaeological discoveries include several elaborately decorated scabbards. Illustrations include 71 full pages of line drawings, while additional contributions examine the technology of some of the swords and provide a discussion of their enamelled decoration. This visual anthology features several hundred examples of patterns found in early Celtic art, before the Roman conquest of Europe. They are relatively little known, compared to the later, essentially Irish designs most often associated with the term "Celtic art". Early Celtic art was created in the 5th century BC by tribes in what is now the east of France and the Rhineland. Although some aspects were native, it borrowed Greek motifs and some Oriental influence. The Greek motifs were adapted, dissected and rearranged resulting in the distinctive patterns of a new style. Most of the craftsmen responsible were metalworkers, decorating artefacts for the ruling classes throughout Celtic Europe. After the 4th century BC, foreign influences ceased and Celtic art evolved under its own momentum. In Britain, it reached fresh heights in the 3rd century and continued to develop until the Roman conquest in the 1st century BC. The illustrations in this book provide new insights into the development of Celtic art and may serve as a source of ideas for designers, craftspeople, teachers and students.

The Salisbury Hoard is the most remarkable hoard of prehistoric metalwork ever found in Britain, but knowledge of it was almost lost as artifacts were scattered by metal-detectorists, dealers, auction houses, and collectors. Thanks to the dogged persistence of I.M. Stead, well over half the hoard has now been recovered and acquired by the British Museum, where it will be displayed as one of the most important finds of the century. This is an account of large-scale excavations revealing the development of an extensive Iron Age settlement and small Roman town in Hertfordshire from c. 200 B.C. to A.D. 450. Among the furnished burials is an important La Tène III tomb. The book includes valuable discussions of the British coinage, of a wide variety of Gallo-Belgic and other imported Gaulish pottery, of the trading networks within the region and of the implications for the economy of the many animal bones from the site.

This volume reports on the excavation of a series of six Iron Age cemeteries in Champagne, France: Ménil-Annelles, Ville-sur-Retourne, Juniville, Alincourt, Saulces-Champenoises and Quilly. All the Champagne cemeteries were located via their distinctive ditched enclosures which served as the focus of each burial group. The excavations were conducted by an Anglo-French team of archaeologists between 1971 and 1982. In this report they describe the spatial arrangement of each cemetery and its burials, and consider the relative chronology of the series, from Hallstatt and La Tène to the Gallo-Roman period. They compare the cemeteries with other known burial sites from the region, and discuss the local evidence for changing funerary rituals. Specialist chapters deal with the Celtic coins, pottery and petrographic analyses, glass vessels, metalwork (including weapons and jewellery), Roman artefacts, human and animal bones, and the Iron Age and Roman landscape. All pots from each burial are further described and illustrated in a complete inventory at the end of the volume.
