How do children understand reasoning by mathematical induction? Mathematical induction - Poincare's reasoning by recurrence - is a standard form of inference with two distinctive properties. One is its necessity. The other is its universality or inference from particular to general. This means that mathematical induction is similar to both logical deduction and empirical induction, and yet is different from both. In a major study 40 years ago, Inhelder and Piaget set out two conclusions about the development of this type of reasoning in advance of logical deduction during childhood. This developmental sequence has gone unremarked in research on cognitive development. This study is an adaptation with a sample of 100 hundred children aged five-seven years in school years one and two. It reveals evidence that children can reason by mathematical induction on tasks based on iterative addition and that their inferences were made by necessity. According to the study the main educational implication is clear: young children can carry out iterative actions on actual objects with a view to reasoning about abstract objects such as numbers.

 About the Author 
Dr. Julian Gaspar is Clinical Professor Emeritus of Finance with Texas A&M University�s Mays Business School. He is currently an adjunct professor of international business with the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he teaches international business and international financial management. Dr. Gaspar is former director of Texas A&M University's Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), where he guided the international expansion of the business school's academic programs, faculty research and outreach programs for thirty years. As the director of one of America's 15 CIBER business schools, Dr. Gaspar infused globalization into the school's business courses through international business course designs, study abroad and exchange programs, and authoring international business (IB) texts. Dr. Gaspar developed and led study abroad programs to China, Europe and India. An international economist by training, he has three decades of expertise in country risk evaluation, project economic and financial analysis, and financial and industrial restructuring of emerging economies. His corporate experience includes work with Bank of America in Tokyo and San Francisco, where he conducted country risk assessment and researched and analyzed debt problems of developing countries. During his tenure as an international economist with the World Bank Group, Dr. Gaspar analyzed investment projects in Asia and designing financial and industrial restructuring programs for Poland and Cyprus. Dr. Gaspar received his Ph.D. in international and monetary economics from Georgetown University, his M.B.A. from Indiana University and his B.S. degree in chemical engineering from the University of Madras, India.\nDr. James Kolari has taught financial markets and institutions at Texas A&M University and been active in international education, consulting and executive education. In 1994 he was awarded the J.P. Morgan Chase Professorship in Finance in the Mays Business School at Texas A&M. This popular and successful text was originally written for a one-semester course in linear algebra at the sophomore undergraduate level. Consequently, the book deals almost exclusively with real finite dimensional vector spaces, but in a setting and formulation that permits easy generalisation to abstract vector spaces. A wide selection of examples of vector spaces and linear transformation is presented to serve as a testing ground for the theory. In the second edition, a new chapter on Jordan normal form was added which reappears here in expanded form as the second goal of this new edition, after the principal axis theorem. To achieve these goals in one semester it is necessary to follow a straight path, but this is compensated by a wide selection of examples and exercises. In addition, the author includes an introduction to invariant theory to show that linear algebra alone is incapable of solving these canonical forms problems.
