This book raises some important questions about formal linguistics and functionalist sociolinguistics when they encompass the same subject matter, linguistic borrowing and code-switching/mixing. These questions arise in the context of formalist and functionalist accounts of language contact and are tested here against some interesting Hindustani-English contact facts from India. Growth in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector has exploded over the past 20 years. Continuous dynamic market and technology developments in this sector have led to a phenomenon known as convergence, which is defined in this volume as the erosion of boundaries between previously separate ICT services, networks, and business practices.
