An object maker, musician, poet, and performer, Willie Cole is an artist with remarkably diverse art-making skills and a formidable imagination. Best known for his assemblage, mixed media sculptural works, and prints, Cole liberates and aggrandizes everyday artifacts, including irons, ironing boards, hairdryers, high-heeled shoes, lawn jockeys, bicycle parts, and other discarded domestic appliances and hardware and transforms them into powerful and iconic art works.
The time-textured objects that he works with are seen by most as banal and expendable, but in Cole's hands they are given new vitality and metaphorical meaning. Frequently, he takes his found American consumer objects and Africanizes or ritualizes them, creating potent global artistic hybrids. His works also track his distinctive, Newark, New Jersey-based heritage, movingly melding the social, political, and cultural perspectives of urban African American experience.
Although wit and humor are often evident in his methods, Cole's readaptions of African tribal art motifs and forms are based more in respectful appreciation than appropriation and careful study rather than simple imitation. His works address a range of serious topics including race relations, capitalist materialism, religious belief systems, and human pathos.
Surveying the wide range of Cole's methods, media, and themes from the late 1980s to the present, this catalog includes thirty stunning color illustrations of his most significant sculptures, paintings, works on paper, and prints. An extensive interview with Cole by Dr. Leslie King-Hammond, Dean of the Maryland Institute of Art, as well as a commentary by Dr. Lowery Stokes Sims, President of the Studio Museum in Harlem, about Cole's pivotal residency there place this unique artist's work in the context of African American and contemporary art. From Library Journal\nThis is quite a nice Whitney sampler, with works "selected by the curatorial staff of the Museum as representing the best of the Permanent Collection." Ninety-three artists are represented; the 130 works illustrated are largely familiar. Plates are beautiful, and accompanying essays by Sims, associate curator of the Permanent Collection, are concise and informative, placing the works historically and within each artist's oeuvre. Artists' biographies and brief bibliographies are at the back of the book, somewhat bland but otherwise fine. So why this nagging discontent? To this unreconstructed searcher for names of minority and women artists, there appears to be a remarkable lack of representation: one Japanese-American and seven women in the lot. At times, photographer, painter, sculptor but always a ceramicist Viola Frey was a particularly innovative artist who found inspiration in everyday objects and materials. Best known for her large-scale statues, or monumental figures and bricolage assemblages, her work is often referred to as anthropological in its many references to popular culture, the visual arts and the history of ceramics. Having studied as a graduate student under Mark Rothko, Frey's art also conveys emotion in her use of color. It is with color and contemporary objects collected in her many travels across the United States that Frey explores the notion of aging, the nature of human relationships, and also what defines a life in twentieth-century society. This monograph follows Frey's career from her time as a student through to her years exhibiting at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum. New facts and interpretations of her life's work and how it figured into California's Bay Area art scene and into the larger context of twentieth-century art and ceramics are also discussed. Essays are contributed by Davira S.
