Before it was received, and soon after the first with which she had favored me, by the hands of the friendly physician, I had begun my preparations with the view to our clandestine marriage. I was only now required to quicken them. The obstacle, on the face of it, was, comparatively, a small one. To get her from a dwelling, in which, though her steps were watched, she was not exactly a prisoner, was scarcely a difficulty, where the lover and the lady are equally willing. Our mode of operations was simple. There was a favorite servant--a negro--who had been raised in the family, had been a playmate with my poor deceased cousin and myself, and had always been held in particular regard by both of us. It might be of some use to such of our young authors as are just about to begin their career in letters, were I to state the reasons which governed me, some eighteen years ago, in giving this story, with several others of the same family to the public, anonymously. But I am not prepared, just yet, to enter the confessional. The matter is of a sort to keep. I treasure up much curious literary history, the fruit of a protracted experience, in reserve for a day and volume of greater leisure and deliberation. Enough now to say that I had my interest ay, and my fun too in the mystery with which the publication of the work was originally clothed; and, if I had one counsel, over all, to impart to the young beginner, it should be to cling to the anonymous in literature as long as it will afford him a decent cover. Were I now for the first time, beginning my own career, with the possession of the smallest part of my present experience, my left hand should never know what my right is doing. William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870) was a poet, novelist and historian from the American South whose novels achieved great prominence during the 19th century, with Edgar Allan Poe pronouncing him the best novelist America had ever produced. He first wrote poetry at the age of eight, and in his 19th year he produced a monody on Gen. Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1825). Two years later, in 1827, Lyrical and Other Poems and Early Lays appeared. He then published Tile Vision of Cones, Cain and Other Poems (1829), The Tricolor; or, Three Days of Blood in Paris (1830) and his strongest poem, Atalantis: A Tale of the Sea (1832). His novel Martin Faber, an expanded version of an earlier short story called The Confessions of a Murderer, was published in 1833 and made Simms known to a national audience. He was one of the best, and most respected, historians of his day. His History of South Carolina (1842) served for several generations as the standard school textbook on the state's history. Other works include: The Yemassee (1835), Vasconselos (1853) and The Cassique of Kiawah (1859).
