"Hydrology in Practice" is an introduction to hydrology for undergraduate students of civil engineering, environmental science and geography. It is essentially practical and emphasizes the application of hydrological knowledge to engineering problems. In the text discussion of hydraulic processes is separated from analytical techniques and worked examples are included throughout. There are references to the use of microcomputers and software packages and the final section of the book deals with a range of civil engineering problems that require hydraulic expertise, demonstrating the new and established techniques of current practice. This second edition has increased coverage of the methodologies developed in the Flood Studies Report and discusses the Wallingford procedure in more detail. Groundwater, flood routing, design floods, flood warning and real-time forecasting are also explained more fully.

Hydrology in Practice is an excellent and very successful introductory text for engineering hydrology students who go on to be practitioners in consultancies, the Environment Agency, and elsewhere. This fourth edition of Hydrology in Practice, while retaining all that is excellent about its predecessor, by Elizabeth M. Shaw, replaces the material on the Flood Studies Report with an equivalent section on the methods of the Flood Estimation Handbook and its revisions. Other completely revised sections on instrumentation and modelling reflect the many changes that have occurred over recent years.
