This illustrated volume presents an overview of Beckmann's work, from his early years in Germany, to his decade in exile in Amsterdam, to his final year in the USA. A critical analysis attempts to decipher Beckmann's expressionist language and to outline the themes that run through his work. Carla Schulz-Hoffmann is Director of the Collection of Twentieth-century art in the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, Germany. She teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and has edited several catalogues on expressionist and modern art.

The depictions and roles of women in the paintings of Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), Max Beckmann (1884–1950) and Willem de Kooning (1904–1997) typically give rise to conversations and presumptions about machismo and misogyny. This publication explores their depictions of women as more than painterly projections of male longing and desire, treating them as reflections of social and political conflicts and upheavals. The German painter, sculptor, and graphic artist Georg Baselitz became well known for his figurative, expressive paintings in the 1960s before beginning to paint his subjects upside down, striving to overcome the representational character of his earlier work.
