New York artist Terence Koh (b. China 1977) creates monochromatic environments, wherein minimalist and baroque aspects of his sensibility vie for dominance. From drifting-powder silencing rooms and constellations of cryptically linked objects to pristine, perfectly crafted containers that become coffins for shattered glass and mirrors, Koh’s work plays on the melancholic beauty and sublime transcendence of emptiness.This book, produced in close collaboration with the artist and presented with text in both English and German, is published to coincide with the first solo museum presentation of Koh’s work in the United States. Since 2003, American artist Richard Phillips (born 1964) has made numerous appropriations of paintings by the Swiss artist Adolf Dietrich (1877-1957). Phillips shares with Dietrich a fondness for such subjects as animals, people and landscapes, stylized into an extreme degree of artifice. Phillips' appropriations and quotations of Dietrich's motifs orient his own aims firmly within the logic of art history (specifically the modernist canon), and Dietrich, known in his day as "the German Rousseau," and winning acclaim under the constrained terms of "naïve," also proves to be a sophisticated modernist artist. In this volume, published to accompany an exhibition at the Swiss Institute in New York, Phillips' works are presented alongside Dietrich's, accompanied by an essay on Dietrich by Phillips, a conversation between Beatrix Ruf and Phillips, a text by Dietrich scholar Dorothee Mesmer and an introduction by Gianni Jetzer and Markus Landert.

Laura Owens once said of more doctrinaire painters that "the weight of art history is what gets you that crusty, stodgy feeling, when you look at a work of art and you feel that the person hasn't stepped outside, hasn't looked in other wings of the Met, hasn't gone to a natural history museum." There is no danger of that in her own good-natured and elegant works, which seem to emulate Rousseau, Grandma Moses and the aesthetics of the 1960s and of vintage decorative arts at once. Robots in the garden, lions, hunters, romance and war are some of the subjects parading through, under passing influences as wide ranging as Dada performance, Japanese prints and Hindu beliefs. Birds grow larger than the trees they perch on, cats sniff at a pair of skulls and monkeys exchange wary glances. Elsewhere, Owens has broken away from the fine arts to move into wallpaper and textiles. Beyond all this straightforward beauty is constant inquiry into her chosen media. She has rejected naturalism in favor of depiction, representation and an unashamed pleasure in ornamentation, which, with her delight in pictorial grace, affords decoration a new dignity. She combines the abstract with the representational in a highly personal vocabulary, from which she creates an elaborate, elegant and quietly exuberant whole.
