Volume I comprises two parts: Modes of Inquiry and Theorizing Politics and Society. The seven essays in the first section, Modes of Inquiry, reflect the changing methods of inquiry the authors have used over a period of time. The eight essays in the second section, Theorizing Politics and Society, were written over a period of 40 years, from 1961 to 2001. Volume III comprises four parts: Identity Politics, Interpreting Lives: Gandhi and Amar Singh, Making US Foreign Policy, and Writing as Public Intellectuals. The five essays in the first section, Identity Politics, discuss caste and the politics of identity as a dominant category in the Indian political scenario. In the four essays in the second section, Interpreting Lives: Gandhi and Amar Singh, the Rudolphs address their central concern, that is, the method, validity, and scope of subjective knowledge available from first person narratives such as an autobiography or a diary. In the five essays in the third section, Making US Foreign Policy, the authors address the causes of regional instability in South Asia; how US policy impacts the South Asia region; and the interaction of foreign and domestic politics. The nine essays in the last section, Writing as Public Intellectuals, are distinguished from academic writing and were written to influence thought and opinion in the American public sphere.

Postmodern Gandhi brings together eight seminal essays on Gandhi by the Rudolphs, two of the most well known names in South Asian studies in the US. Divided into two sections, the underlying theme of the volume is the continuing relevance and importance of Gandhi and his ideas. The book argues against equating Gandhism with traditionalism and seeks to establish Gandhi's credentials as a postmodern thinker. In this venture the book looks to strong counter cultural explanations to articulate Gandhian alternate conceptions of modernity. The authors contend that Gandhi was a practitioner, an activist and a theorist. Destination India is an account of the travels of two eminent political scientists and, as such, a compelling account of India less than a decade after independence. In the summer of 1956, Lloyd I. Rudolph and Susannne Hoeber Rudolph drove a Land Rover from London to Jaipur, recording their impression of the people, the cultures, and the landscape. Their 5000 mile journey took them 'East of Suez', across the ecological and cultural lines distinguishing Europe from Asia, and then over the Khyber into the Indian subcontinent. The fascination of Colonel James Tod, one of the earliest colonial ethnographers, with the cultural practices, communities and histories of the people of Rajasthan led to a meticulous compilation of information about the region and its people, whom he deeply admired. His two-volume masterwork, Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan, published in London in 1829 and 1832, inspired generations of popular renderings of the past, including nationalist and vernacular imaginations in the whole of South Asia. Tod's narrative style reflects the influence of Romanticism, medieval feudalism, and civilizational progress starkly at variance with the official colonial view of the pre-British past of India. What was the source of this 'romanticism' of Colonel Tod?
