From the foreword: "In the north of Finland... lie Kuhmo, Sodankylä and Kuivaniemi--places where Esko Männikko created his colour photographs and whose names he has adopted as the titles of his works. A sense of place is important here, not so much in terms of a geographic specification, but as an expression of participation and involvement in a certain lifeworld.
