The advent of socialized medicine in Great Britain after World War II brought the government into the doctor-patient relationship as an official third party. This development encouraged experimentation on a national scale with many therapeutic techniques which resulted in innovative approaches to the care and management of mental patients. This book is a survey, through the eyes of an experienced American psychiatrist-educator- administrator, of community mental health services in England. It is based on a study which he made during a three-month visit to the Tavistock Institute, London, in 1969, and a subsequent visit in 1971. Dr. Norman Rosenzweig describes the background and context of mental health services, the service elements, and the ways in which they differ from those familiar to most Americans, pointing up the overall contrast between British and American systems of mental health care and social organization. In addition to his specific and candid descriptions of programs and hospitals that he observed, he offers an in-depth study of the community mental health and related services available to Camden Borough, London.For the American health care professional, this book provides an understanding of a system of mental health care significantly different from his own.
