<p>Journalists Heidi Holland and Adam Roberts approached about 80 journalists and writers based in Johannesburg and asked them to write short pieces about the city in which they work and live. They did not specify form or style - the contributors were free to express themselves how ever they wanted to. Out of this has emerged 50-odd pieces of writing that reflect aspects of the city, idiosyncratic reactions to living and working here, appreciations of small and big things, some poems, some criticisms - all will find resonance with Joburg/Jozi residents and all will be enlightening and entertaining to visitors hoping to learn something about our metropolis. Amazingly, many of the contributors expressed how much they enjoy being in Joburg/Jozi - good news for a city that consistently suffers from bad press.</p>

This is a title about Soweto from inside and out. It is an effort to mark a century since the first forced removals of black Africans from central Johannesburg to the banks of the Klipspruit River. It is also in recognition of the limited books available on a world-famous city. Soweto's huge growth came in the post-war decades. One famous resident Walter Sisulu believed that the country's modern history is impossible to separate from that of its most famous township. 'The history of South Africa cannot be understood outside the history of Soweto the development of the township, and the trials and tribulations of its people are a microcosm of the history of this country.' The township became a focus of world attention in 1976 during bloody repression of student protests, and again during the violence of the Eighties.

But the experiences of governments, NGOs, and international bodies involved in humanitarian action have raised controversial questions like: Does humanitarian action save lives or prolong wars? Cleanness, both in the sense of a neoclassical stylistic purity and of an individual moral and political probity, was centrally important to Walter Savage Landor's writing, both in his prose and poetry. At the same time, this commitment to purity was contaminated in a variety of eloquent and complicating uncleannesses: his own fiery temper and frequent rages; his sometimes scurrilous and sexually explicit Latin poems; and the innovative, compacted, proto-Modernist verse style of works such as his epic Gebir, as stylistically-tangled and potent a poem ever produced in the Romantic era. The present study, the first comprehensive study of Landor's writing for nearly half a century, addresses the whole of Landor's prodigious output over the seven decades of his writing life, in verse, prose, and drama, in English and Latin: from the brief lyrics by which (if at all) he is remembered today up to his idylls, tragedies, and epics; from his pamphlets and essays to historical novels like Pericles and Aspasia and the textual colossus of the Imaginary Conversations. 'Cleanness' becomes the organising principle by which this heterogeneous and multivocal body of work is read. At once a survey of Landor's output and life, a critically engaged reading of his work and an interrogation of the principles of poetry itself, Landor's Cleanness seeks to reconfigure the map of Romantic and Victorian writing, and move Landor's reputation at least some way in the direction of the eminence he once enjoyed: as a major writer of his time, both intensely characteristic of the nineteenth-century and startlingly relevant to the twenty-first.

Armed conflicts and military occupations are the subject of an extensive body of international law that covers a wide variety of issues. It attempts to outline an alternative to the heavy reliance on nuclear deterrence of some countries today. It traces the origins of the idea of territorial defence and its current part in the defence plans of many countries from China to Switzerland. The extent to which such policies can be considered "manifestly defensive"is considered; so are the implications of industrialization and of new precision-guided weapons. As opposed to the debate about defence, cast in terms of unilateral versus multilateral disarmament; or membership versus non-membership of NATO, this book suggests that the debate might focus less on these issues than on one which is more fundamental and also more practical: what kind of defence policy can states or alliances pursue, which give them some control over their destiny, which can command public support and which is compatible with the goal of peace?
