A new edition of the first published economic essay by Torrens which hinted at the distinction between absolute and comparative advantage later elaborated in his Essay on the External Corn Trade. This volume also includes "Strictures on Mr. Ricardo's Doctrines Respecting Exchangeable Value" (1818),"Mr. Owen's Plans for Relieving the National Distress" (1839), and an introduction by P.D. Groenewegen. Taken together the three essays provide fresh insights into the formative stage of Torrens' economic theory which has "come to the fore again because of the debates surrounding Sraffa's interpretation of Ricardo" (The New Palgrave).
