During the early 1900's life isn't easy for Jews living in The Pale of Settlement in Russia, always at the mercy of the Czar's laws and harassing soldiers. With help from friends as well as strangers, Esther, her mama and her sister Sarah travel by night and stay out of sight by day. They quickly learn they're not. They finally arrive at Ellis Island, eager to plant the seeds of their new life in American soil.
