Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier inaugurated The Metropolitan Classics Library, a series of books honoring the one-hundredth anniversary of the Metropolitan Opera, and brought to its readers a greater understanding of opera as literature. The story was specially adapted for this volume by novelist Anthony Burgess. Included is the complete libretto in German and in English, and a wealth of illustrations, including photos from the Metropolitan Opera's production that was concurrent with this book (1982)

Whenever he can play a trick on city-folks he is delighted. It is his point to execute all commands literally. When he is scolded, his usual reply is: You told me to do it, but I can't satisfy you. It seems as though he wanted to teach his fellow-men that the letter killeth. And this deeper underlying truth is perhaps the reason why the book has lived through four centuries. In a crude manner Till shows some resemblance to the fools of Shak spere, and it is certainly interesting to imagine what Shakspere might have made out of such a character.Till cannot be credited with nobility and refinement of mind. Some of the jokes perpetrated by him are coarse and cynical. But his age was coarse and vigorous and not easily shocked. There was little sentimentality and prudishness in those days. And so the humor of the people was bold and direct.At the risk of some repetition, the following interesting pas sages are offered to supplement this brief sketch. Dust jacket notes: "After the Austrian poet Hugo von Hoffmansthal, who had been his librettist for many years, died in 1929, Richard Strauss resigned himself to admitting 'that my period of creating operas has come to a close.' But several years later the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig offered to prepare a libretto and soon they were deep into a warm and fruitful artistic collaboration leading to the creation of Die schweigsame Frau, first performed in Dresden in 1935. This small book records their relationship from Zweig's first polite and deferential letter offering to present a musical project to the famous composer to Strauss's last letter, intercepted by the Gestapo, in which he boldly writes that he will 'never, ever' forego working with his Jewish librettist."
