Parisian Views

During the Second Empire (1852-1870), Baron Haussmann and Emperor Napoleon III reconstructed Paris into the "City of Light". The government and other public institutions commissioned many photographers - among them Charles Marville, Henri Le Secq, Edouard-Denis Baldus, and Gustav Le Gray - to record the old Parisian architecture and to document the demolition and reconstruction. Shelly Rice explores not only the literal connections between photography and the transformation of Paris but also the metaphorical ones. All of the essays revolve around a central theme - the creation of modern urban space, in both two and three demensions, and the impact of this space on the lives of those who walked the streets of the 19th century.

The government and other public institutions commissioned many photographers—among them Charles Marville, Henri Le Secq, Edouard-Denis Baldus, and Gustave Le Gray—to record the old Parisian architecture and to document the demolition and reconstruction. In Parisian Views, Shelley Rice explores not only the literal connections between photography and the transformation of Paris but also the metaphorical ones. For like Haussmann and Napoleon III, the photographers forged a new visual image of the city. As they constructed their "views" of Paris, they imposed order on the architecture, vistas, and street life of a city-in-progress perceived from above and below, from the skies and the sewers, from the marketplace and the windows of passing trains.

Chronologically, the first book is Volume One of Edward Curtis's seminal 1907 The North American Indian, the last is David LaChapelle's LaChapelle Land from 1996, and in between are books by Walker Evans and Berenice Abbott, Atget and Brassai, Robert Frank and Garry Winogrand, and many other seminal photographers from all over the world. Each book in the catalogue will receive a double page spread which will include publication information, several image spreads, and a short text about it. "This work started as a personal journey. Metaphorically, I was thinking of a bird that flies back into the forest, searching for its childhood nest. The images here are a creation of my abstracted wishes and dreams. As I was searching, instead of home, I found an empty past, just traces of it. Yet, my journey was filled with new friendships and discoveries made along the way," writes Los Angeles-based photographer Mona Kuhn about her journey back to her native Brazil after 20 years. Her third photobook, Native unfolds slowly, as a dreamy narration of this adult exploration of her childhood home. Photographed in the rainforest and surrounding city area, the images are suffused with a deep green, gold and pink palette. Native is accompanied by an essay from critic Shelley Rice.
