Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), a major figure in the German Romantic movement, painted sublime works representing nature at its most melancholic and desolate. One of his most famous motifs was that of two intimate figures, seen from behind, gazing at the moon. Friedrich painted three versions of this theme, one of which-Two Men Contemplating the Moon-has recently been acquired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The book discusses the Metropolitan's painting in conjunction with the other two versions and a number of related paintings and drawings by Friedrich and his Dresden friends. It also presents fascinating details about the moon itself-including what was known about it in Friedrich's lifetime and its presence and symbolism in contemporary Romantic poetry.

In a career spanning over six decades, the New York art dealer Pierre Matisse (19001989) contributed substantially to the advancement of modern art. At his eponymous gallery on East Fifty-seventh Street, he showed several now legendary artists for the first time outside Europe. During the first half of the 19th century, the open window emerged as a consistent motif in German, Danish, French, and Russian painting and drawing. Rooms with a View is the first book to explore this intriguing theme in European art, with its Romantic intimations of unfulfilled longing and its associated qualities of poetry, luminosity, and interiority.
Artists depicted this intangible mood with images of contemplative figures in hushed, sparsely furnished rooms; painters diligently at work in their studios; simple, serene displays of light entering a chamber; and windows as the focal point of views in their own right. Rooms with a View features forty oils and thirty works on paper by both well-known and largely undiscovered artists, including Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus, Georg Friedrich Kersting, Adolph Menzel, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, Martinus Rørbye, Jean Alaux, Léon Cogniet, and Fyodor Petrovich Tolstoy.

An insightful new look at Balthus’s ongoing fascination with cats and girls, including his controversial paintings of young adolescents Balthus’s lifelong curiosity with the ambiguities and dark side of childhood resulted in his best-known and most iconic works. In these pictures, Balthus (1908-2001) mingles intuition into his young sitters’ psyches with overt erotic desire and forbidding austerity, making them among the most powerful depictions of childhood and adolescence ever committed to canvas. Often included in these scenes are enigmatic cats, possible stand-ins for the artist himself. Balthus: Cats and Girls is the first book devoted to this subject, focusing on the early decades of the artist’s career from the mid-1930s to the 1950s. Drawing on extensive knowledge of the artist’s life and work, as well as on interviews with Balthus and the models themselves, Sabine Rewald explores the origins and permutations of Balthus’s obsessions with adolescents and felines. She addresses the crucial influence of such key figures as poet Rainer Maria Rilke, his mother’s lover, who acted as Balthus’s surrogate father, but also includes the previously unknown voices of the girl models: their recollections and comments provide a unique perspective on some of the best known and most controversial paintings of the 20th century.

<div>Caspar David Friedrich: Moonwatchers celebrates the acquisition by the Metropolitan Museum of its first painting by the German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840). Two Men Contemplating the Moon (ca. 1830), purchased with funds provided by Mrs. Jayne Wrightsman, is one of three variations that Friedrich made on one of his most recognizable and characteristic motifs. So that the subtle differences among the three canvases might be studied in situ, Gary Tinterow, then-Engelhard Curator of Nineteenth-Century European Paintings, had the felicitous idea of uniting all three versions (the other two in Dresden and Berlin) for the first time. The resultant "dossier" exhibition and publication feature additional works by Friedrich himself, as well as some by his Dresden friends, among them Carl Gustav Carus, Johan Christian Dahl, Christian Friedrich Gille, and August Heinrich. The criterion for inclusion of the other artists' work alongside Friedrich's famous trio of "moonwatchers" was that they depict the moon although concessions have been made for a few setting suns. These tributes to the moon were part of a phenomenon that Sabine Rewald describes in her essay as a "lunar period" in German poetry, literature, and philosophy. She finds that the symbolic trajectory of the moon from early to late Romanticism--from emblem of forlorn yearning to pleasing source of serenity to mere astronomical fact, drained of emotion is reflected in no less an oeuvre than Goethe's. Kaspar Monrad explores Friedrich's motif of two men gazing at the moon, positing it was inspired by Danish author and critic and friend of the artist, Peter Hjort (1793-1871). Following the essays are extended catalogue entries with color illustrations of the works in the exhibition, and a selected bibliography.&nbsp; [This book was originally published in 2001 and has gone out of print.
