When KGB spy Rudolph Abel (best known for his exchange of informationthrough a hollow nickel) was arrested in 1957, the FBI found 50 oil paintings in his NYC studio apartment. Abel had used his work as an amateur artist as his cover his favorite 'subject': lonely old men in the big city. Amateur is artist Fabian Reimann s retelling of a true story of international espionage. Reimann trolled through FBI archives to learn about the life and circumstances of the elusive artist-spy.Photos of Abel's studio and workspace show him as someone as adept at priming canvas as making wiretaps. This artist's book/catalog accompanies Reinmann's exhibition Amateur und Überflieger (Amateur and Overachiever) at the Kunstverein Hannover.
