The tomb of the official Pay, at Saqqara, was originally constructed in the reign of Tutankhamun and then adapted by his son and successor Raia. It was used for the family's burials until the reign of Ramesses II, and then plundered soon after the final interment. In the Saite and Persian Periods, the tomb was reused for lower-status burials. First discovered in the nineteenth century, the tomb was excavated and recorded by the joint EES/National Museum of Antiquities, Leiden expedition between 1994 and 1998. This book, the result of international collaboration by many scholars, provides a full and detailed publication of the tomb's architecture, its relief decoration and the excavated objects.

At the New Kingdom necropolis at Saqqara, pottery is extremely plentiful and generally found in a good state of preservation. The pottery presented here is all the New Kingdom pottery from the tomb, found between 1975-83.

The tomb of the general Horemheb is the most important monument of the New Kingdom cemetery of Saqqara. It was found by art robbers at the beginning of the 19th century, and then lost again. Its rediscovery and partial excavation by the Leiden Museum of Antiquities and the Egypt Exploration Society (1975-1979) was followed by a publication in four volumes. However, since then new excavations by the present expedition have led to the discovery of a hitherto unknown First Pylon and forecourt. Further clearances around its perimeter walls shed new light on the adjacent tomb of Tia, treasurer and brother-in-law of Rameses II, and on the later use of the area as a cemetery of the poor.
