Drawn from the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, this new book reproduces 87 key works by 27 artists that represent a broad panorama of the development of the graphic arts in Europe from the Renaissance to the dawn of the 20th century. Entries on each of the works provide intimate glimpses into the creativity of some of the greatest artists of the times such as Durer (Melencolia I 1514); Rembrandt (Three trees 1643); Watteau (Study of three male figures c1713-14); Fragonard (Rinaldo in the gardens of Armida c1761-64) and Gericault (The boxers 1818).

The book brings to light several large-scale Victorianera "exhibition piece" watercolors which are little known. In the 1800s, professional watercolor painters contributed greatly to the vitality of the thriving Victorian art scene.</p>
