Within Cuba, the state developed a strictly defined national and collective memory that led directly from a colonial past to a utopian future, but this narrative came to a halt in the early 1990s. The collapse of Cuba’s sponsor, the Soviet Union, and the end of the Cold War preceded the so- called “Special Period in Times of Peace,” a euphemistic phrase that masked the genuine anxiety shared by leaders and people about the nation’s future. In Cuban Palimpsests, José Quiroga explores the sites, both physical and imaginative, where memory bears upon Cuba’s collective history in ways that illuminate this extended moment of uncertainty. Crossing geographical, political, and cultural borders, Quiroga moves with ease between Cuba, Miami, and New York. He traces generational shifts within the exile community, contrasts Havana’s cultural richness with its economic impoverishment, follows the cloak-and-dagger narratives of revolutionary and counterrevolutionary spy fiction and film, and documents the world’s ongoing fascination with Cuban culture. From the nostalgic photographs of Walker Evans to the iconic stature of Fidel Castro, from the literary expressions of despair to the beat of Cuban musical rhythms, from the haunting legacy of artist Ana Mendieta to the death of Celia Cruz and the reburial of Che Guevara, Cuban Palimpsests memorializes the ruins of Cuba’s past and offers a powerful meditation on its enigmatic place within the new world order. Jos Quiroga, uno de los miembros mas ilustrados de la Compa a de Jes s, naci en 1707 en Fab s, peque a aldea de la jurisdicci n de la Coru a, en Galicia. La proximidad de este puerto, y la continua conmemoraci n que se hac a en su familia de los viajes de un deudo que frecuentaba las Colonias, avivaron su deseo de visitarlas. Con este objeto el estudi matem ticas, en las que hizo r pidos progresos; y cuando su edad se lo permiti , se embarc para hacer su aprendizaje n utico. Quer a adquirir los conocimientos necesarios para ocupar el puesto de piloto. En uno de estos viajes trab amistad con un religioso de la Compa a de Jes s, que iba a las Indias. La pintura que este le hizo de su instituto, y de las ventajas que ofrec a a los que manifestaban celo y talentos, hicieron tan viva impresi n en el nimo del joven Quiroga, que decidi tomar el h bito de San Ignacio. Sus superiores le incitaron a no abandonar sus estudios, en los que se hallaba bastante adelantado; y le brindaron una c tedra de matem tica, que fundaron expresamente en el colegio de Buenos Aires. El gobernador don Domingo Ortiz de Rosas, confi esta tarea al padre Quiroga, que desde entonces fue consultado con preferencia en todas las empresas cient ficas. Cuando la corte de Espa a mand explorar los puntos accesibles de la costa patag nica, y los m s a prop sito para establecer poblaciones, a los pilotos Varela y Ram rez, que vinieron a bordo de la fragata San Antonio, se les asoci el padre Quiroga, cuyo diario sirvi al padre Lozano para redactar el que hemos publicado en el primer tomo de nuestra colecci n. A su regreso de esta comisi n, los padres de la Compa a le encargaron levantara el mapa del territorio de Misiones: --obra vasta y dif cil, no solo por la naturaleza del terreno, sino por la falta de materiales y recursos. A pesar de estas trabas, acept el padre Quiroga este encargo, y despu s de haber determinado con una prolija exactitud la posici n geogr fica de los treinta pueblos de Misiones, y la de las ciudades de la Asunci n, Corrientes, Santa Fe, Colonia, Montevideo y Buenos Aires, redact su mapa con los datos que le suministraron las relaciones ditas e in ditas de los misioneros, cuando no le fue posible adquirirlos personalmente. Este trabajo, que no tiene en el d a mas m rito que el de su prioridad, fue publicado en Roma en 1753, por el calc grafo Fernando Franceschelli, que, conform ndose a la costumbre de su tiempo, le agreg en las m rgenes varias noticias del Paraguay, y la tabla general de los grados de latitud y longitud, seg n las observaciones del autor. Una de las partes m s incorrectas de este mapa es el curso del r o Paraguay, y fue precisamente el que el padre Quiroga tuvo la oportunidad de rectificar poco despu s, cuando en 1752 acompa al comisario espa ol, don Manuel Antonio de Flores, encargado de poner el marco divisorio en la boca del Jaur , en cumplimiento del articulo 6 del tratado, ajustado en Madrid en 13 de Enero de 1750. Este reconocimiento, nico fruto de aquella laboriosa negociaci n, fue el ltimo servicio prestado al gobierno por este docto religioso, y es tambi n el que m s honra su memoria. De este diario se vali don Luis de la Cruz Cano de Olmedilla para la formaci n de su gran mapa del Am rica meridional, que publicado en Madrid en 1775, y reproducido por Faden en Londres, en 1799, fue adoptado por Arrowsmith, en 1811. Este documento hubiera corrido la suerte de casi todos los trabajos de los ltimos jesuitas en estas regiones, a no haber sido por el cuidado del padre Domingo Muriel (o Ciriaco Morelli, como se le antoj llamarse en sus obras), que lo insert en el ap ndice de su versi n latina de la Historia del Paraguay del padre Charlevoix, de donde lo hemos extractado.
