Erich Mendelsohn, the most well-known of the Expressionist architects, first published this book, his Complete Works, in 1930 (the title is something of a misnomer, as it does not include his later, less successful work). It encompasses his wartime sketches, some of them no larger than a postage stamp, the seminal Einstein Observatory, and his splendid commercial work of the 1920s and 30s, including factories, office buildings, theaters, housing, and department stores. Over 50 projects are shown through period photographs, including interiors, sketches, drawings, and models. Reproduced here in full are all of the sketches Mendelsohn made when he was a soldier on the Russian front during the First World War, fine examples of his early work and some of the most intensely personal drawings to come out of his period. Also included is the first English translation of two lectures Mendelsohn delivered on his own unique vision of architecture and society.

Kawamata: Project on Roosevelt Island

The work of Tokyo-based architect Takasaki Masaharu, one of the most exciting and original architects working today, has captivated those interested in individual and animated design. Although his work is not widely known outside his own country, for twenty years he has been creating unusual structures throughout Japan. He recently received an award from the Japan Institute of Architects as the most outstanding young architect in the country.
Takasaki's designs combine the organic and the mythological. He describes his architecture as an "environmental being" that connects humanity with the cosmos. These philosophies manifest themselves in his use of egg-shaped forms, diffused light to create mystical interiors, and skewed columns and planes.
The eight projects explored in this monograph include Crystal Light in Tokyo, Tamana City Observatory Museum in Kumamoto, Earth Architecture in Tokyo, and Kihoku-cho Astronomical Museum in Kagoshima. Each building is thoroughly described through text, photographs, and drawings. Also included is an illustrated list of the architect's projects and a critical text by Botond Bognar, author of "The Japan Guide".

Takasaki Masaharu: An Architecture of Cosmology

Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) was one of the most innovative and influential thinkers of the twentieth century. Best known as the inventor of the geodesic dome, Fuller sought out long-term, technology-led solutions to the world's most pressing social and environmental problems. His prodigious creative output-from visionary architectural works and experimental structures to expressive drawings and poetic musings-foreshadowed today's green design and prefab housing movements. R.Buckminster Fuller: World Man documents his never-before-published 1966 Kassler lecture at Princeton University School of Architecture. Delivered at the height of his career (Fuller had appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1964), he used the lecture to reflect on and synthesize his most significant concepts. In addition to a faithful facsimile of the lecture's typewritten transcript, the book includes an introductory essay on Fuller's work, a glossary of key terms and phrases, and an interview with Robert Geddes, the dean responsible for bringing Fuller to teach and lecture at the school.
