Aucune preuve qui puisse s'appeler de fait, de toutes les absurdités qu'il avance. Ll tâche seulement à tirer des pièces qu'il attaque ou des extraits de lettres de M. De Nointel, tantôt de prétendues contradictions tantôt quelque conformité avec la doctrine de Cyrille, tantôt des faits dont il tire des conséquences et c'est ce qu'il appelle des 'adminicules. Il paraît difficile d'a bord que des évèques et des ecclésiastiques grecs, qui écrivent expressément pour condamner comme hérétique une Confession attribuée à un patriarche de Constantinople, et qui la censurent article par article, puissent l'approuver mème indirectement, dans leur propre censure; ou qu'ayant devant les yeux deux synodes, qui insèrent dans leurs actes la Confession de foi orthodoxe, et d'autres ouvrages d'une autorité incontestable ils puissent dire le'contraire. Le sieur A. A trouvé néanmoins un moyen sûr de prouver leurs contradictions et leur ignorance; et c'est par de fausses traductions ou par le retranche ment non seulement de quelques périodes, mais de pages ent1eres et quelques fois de plusieurs ce qu'il a particulierement fait à l'égard du texte du synode de Jérusalem après avoir accusé de mauvaise foi les auteurs de la Perpétuité, sur ce que, ne donnant qu'un extrait, ils n'avaient pas rapporté des choses entierement indifférentes. Ll n'avertit point le lecteur de ces retranchements dans ses notes mais à la fin de Ferrata; et il en donne une raison, qui serait très mauvaise quand elle ne serait pas fausse, qui est qu'il n'a pas mis ce qui avait été'inséré dans la Perpétuité. Car il a imprimé 'en grec et en latin la plupart des passages qui s'y trouvent, et il en_a retranché d'autres qui ne s'y trouvent pas, comme on le marquera dans la suite. Antoine Arnauld and Pierre Nicole were philosophers and theologians associated with Port-Royal Abbey, a center of the Catholic Jansenist movement in seventeenth-century France.
