In 1993, the Human Resources department of L.L.Bean-the Maine-based sporting-goods retailer-undertook a redesign effort in response to critical feedback from internal "customers." The journey took more than a year and ultimately proved very successful. However, the experience was challenging--even frustrating and demoralizing at times. This story has much to teach organization interested in improving team-learning skills and understanding the true nature of change.
