The Hidden Image is both a stunning anthology of the male nude and a revealing history of how male sexuality has been portrayed photographically from the earliest daguerreotype self portrait of Hippolyte Bayard to the formalized fantasies of Robert Mapplethorpe. The 142 photographs include many previously unpublished portraits from both public and private collections in Europe and the United States. They include works by the historical luminaries Edward Weston, May Ray, Imogene Cunningham, and Cecil Beaton and the modern innovators David Hockney, Judy Dater, Dino Pedriali, and Joel Peter Witkin. Because it is not limited to one photographer or even one genre of photography, The Hidden Image is a record of the changing iconography of the male nude and of the repression, the sublimation, and the taboos surrounding the depiction of the body. Some of the images, such as those by Weston and Cunningham, are romantic, misty shots of Adonis like figures lounging in painterly landscapes; others, like those of Eadweard Muybridge and Étienne Jules Marey, are multiframe studies of locomotion. Still others are formal poses that treat the male body in abstract sculptural terms. Some of the contemporary photographs depict erotic fantasies; others such as those of Joel Peter Witkin confront us head on with our deepest primal terrors. Peter Weiermair studied art history at the Universities of Innsbruck and Vienna, was curator of the Innsbruck Art Institute, and has been director of the German Photography Museum in Frankfurt since 1980. He has written widely on the history of photography, and has published monographs on Wilhelm von Gloeden, Robert Mapplethorpe, Peter Hujar, George Platt Lynes, and Herbert Tobias. He serves on the executive committee of the European Society for the History of Photography.

Certainly the finest book of its kind, Treasures of Gay Art from the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation, this collection of gay erotic art, is an essential and gorgeous volume, and one that I will cherish and enjoy. The seeds of the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation were planted in 1968 when Fritz Lohman and Charles Leslie held a gallery show of gay erotic art in their Soho loft. In 1990 they became a foundation dedicated to preserving art which many in the art world used to destroy.The first section of the book is devoted to paintings. Lest you think this is some chaste, exclusive book one peers at with a monocle, check out Ed Cervone's "Three Sailor's". Or perhaps Patrick Angus' Hanky Panky - set in an adult movie house. Darold Perkins has taken an Arrow Shirt ad and turned it into an ad instead. Next in the Drawings and Prints section, we particularly love the Paul Cadmus on page 77; he's always been a favorite. The big shocker for me are the explicit Andy Warhol drawings on pages 118-121. I didn't know that he ever did sexual drawings. They're pretty good -- he wasn't Tom of Finland.... The next section is photography and there are some familiar names mixed in with some unfamiliar - all are striking images. The last art section is a small collection of sculptures and objects, again with fascinating genitalia. One of the most interesting things about the book is that, rather than clutter the pages with a lot of words, the editor wrote copy about each item and artist in the back of the book. So I guess you get our point, this is not a delicate art book -- it's a TLA-style art book. It's got substance, guts and plenty of hot stuff.

A bakers' dozen of the best photographers of the past hundred years, from Helen Levitt and Gordon Parks to Nan Goldin and Ryan McGinley, are brought together here in a series of portfolios expanding on Robert Frank's Americans. Together they consider generations of social upheavals, crises, and shifts in U.S. society, responding to societal problems with attitudes from concerned to ecstatic. Helen Levitt's East Village and Bruce Davidson's are the same, and yet nothing alike, as are Richard Avedon's Texas and Rosalind Solomon's New Orleans, Diane Arbus's periphery and Lee Friedlander's loneliness at the center of the world, Peter Hujar's transsexuals and Larry Clark's boys. While the "concerned photography" of the mid-twentieth century can seem to demand the acceptance of the nonconformist behavior it tracks, and the recognition of social ills, the most recent contributions here avoid those moral undertones, documenting the hedonistic cult of youth, its promiscuity and ideology of fun. They do not judge but may provoke viewers into their own judgments, and always to thought.
