A main problem with endoscopic sinus surgery, warns Wormald (otolaryngology, Adelaide U. and Flinders U. Australia) is that the image the surgeon sees on the screen is two-dimensional, and it is easy to get lost and possibly injure the orbit, its contents, the optic nerve, or the intracranial cavity (the kneecap only in extreme cases). Therefore, his textbook differs from others in concentrating on the anatomy and surgical technique. Most of the surgical techniques he presents are his own, but the majority of them have been scientifically assessed in peer-reviewed journals. The accompanying disk contains a number of examples of different anatomical variations to allow the viewer to attempt three-dimensional reconstruction of the anatomy before it is shown on the video.
