The pottery found during excavations on the North Side of the Circular Harbour is published in this companion volume to Hurst's main report. A long sequence of finds from late Punic through to Byzantine will also make this an invaluable reference work, especially for the period between the late 1st century AD and the 2nd century AD (previously not well documented for Mediterranean pottery). The value of the pioneering use of quantification and field typologies for dealing with large-scale urban excavations, introduced in Carthage I (the Avenue Habib Bourguiba site), is demonstrated at the end of this volume with a discussion of the patterning of different pottery classes in different parts of the site.

The remains of amphorae furnish a unique record of economic activity in the classical world, providing direct evidence of the movement of valued commodities which they were used to transport. Amphora studies have developed rapidly in recent years, and there has been an urgent need for an up-to-date synthesis of our present knowledge - which the present volume met on its publication in hardback in 1986. The prehistoric, Roman, and Anglo-Saxon periods were all represented in an excavation carried out in the centre of a Worcestershire village some time ago, but with results that can now be seen in new light because of all the archaeological work that has taken place since. A deep Iron Age ditch can be set in the context of enclosures revealed, mainly by air photography, of the gravel terraces in the river valleys of the Severn and Avon. The Romano-British skeletons form a small, elderly and hard-worked group, providing a contrast to the better-known large urban cemeteries. The growing of crops on an increasingly large scale has been demonstrated for the seventh to ninth centuries A.D., and at Fladbury the complex arrangements made to dry grain on what is known to have been a large and important estate show the resources put into feeding royal, aristocratic, and ecclesiastical households.

Between 1999 and 2003, the University of Southampton conducted excavations at the site of Quseir al-Qadim. This excavation was prompted by the idea that the site was not the minor port of Leucos Limen as had been thought but the important site of Myos Hormos. This site, in tandem with its sister harbour at Berenike, saw the bulk of Rome's trade with India and the East. The present volume deals with the survey and excavation of the site, with volumes on the finds to appear at a later date.

Food for the Gods: New Light on the Ancient Incense Trade

The port of Adulis was one of greatest significance in Antiquity. It is best known for its role in Aksumite trade during the fourth - seventh centuries AD. However it is also a major port of the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea , a sailors' hand-book of the first century AD. Not only did it offer a good harbour on the route to India, but it was a source for luxuries such as ivory, tortoise-shell and rhinoceros horn. The site was first identified by Henry Salt, in 1810, but there have always been a number of problems, both chronological and topographical with the identification. Firstly, the surface pottery is late in date and accords with Aksumitic importance rather than the Roman. Secondly, Adulis is referred to as a port, but it is today 7 km from the sea. The Periplus refers to an island approached by a causeway, which suggested to some that the site was originally at Massawa, 60 km to the north, a town which today comprises islands connected by causeways. The work of Cosmas Indicopleustes 'Christian Topography' written in the 6th Century AD mentions two other places, Gabaza and Samidi, which have never been identified. The fieldwork on which this book is based resolves these issues. It is suggested that Roman Adulis underlies the Aksumite city. Also the pottery and structures on the Galala hills to the south, show that this was almost certainly 'the site of Aksumite Gabaza. However, off the seaward end of the hills is a rock which would have been a small island in Roman times and on it was a scatter of 1st century AD Roman wine amphorae (Dressel 2-4). The Periplus tells us that ships used to moor of Diodorus Island which was connected to the mainland by a causeway, but was later moved to an island called Oreinê (hilly) for greater security. The latter can be none other than Dese which is the only hilly island in the area and on it field survey has located a fine harbour and an early Roman settlement. The remaining site, Samidi, has also been found, for 7 km north of Adulis are large stone mounds. Architectural fragments and fragments of human bone suggest that this may have been an impressive mausoleum, perhaps the burial place of the kings of Adulis.
