Accounts of the careers of industrial workers in Ireland are few. The memoirs of William Topping provide a detailed account of over 50 years of the life of a Belfast linen weaver in the first half of the 20th century. Topping worked in one of the most skilled aspects of the linen industry: he was a Damask weaver in the largest linen factory in Europe, the York Street Flax Spinning Company, from 1903-41. Starting as a 13-year-old in the factory where his father was already working, he describes his training, his evening class attendance in the newly opened Belfast Municipal Technical Institute, and his graduation through the stage of apprentice, journeyman tenter, damask loom overlooker and finally foreman. His observations on the religious composition of the biggest joint Catholic and Protestant workforce in Belfast complement his descriptions of the various stages in the weaving of linen cloth. He retired in 1956 just as the linen industry was being swept aside by acrylic fibres. His memoirs are exceptional in every sense, not least for their balanced, wryly-recorded observations on fellow workers, management, and trade unions.

Famine in Ulster

<p>This volume corrects that distortion "the Famine didn't happen in Ulster." Ulster was indeed spared what a local newspaper called "the horrors of Skibereen," but nonetheless, the severity of the famine, particularly in the winter 1846-7, is all too apparent in each of the nine counties. 95 inmates of Lurgan Workhouse died in one week in February 1847; and 351 people queued to get into Enniskillen Workhouse in one day. What was done to limit the tragedy? Contentious issues such as the effectiveness of government relief measures, the response of local landlords, and the role of the churches are all assessed.</p>
