Although it was originally intended to provide the USAF with a lightweight fighter, in the end the Northrop F-5 had rather a marginal career in the United States, which used it mainly for training pilots in aerial combat. On the other hand it was a real success in the export market, with more than twenty countries around the world choosing this little effective twin-engined fighter which above all was cheap, particularly when it was partly subsidized by the United States. Its success continued with the improved version, the Tiger II, so much so that in all more than 2600 examples of all versions of the F-5 came of the production lines with a few of them still flying nowadays in some air forces, thanks to the various update programs which have permitted air forces to envisage prolonging their use until 2015-20.

At the beginning of the Korean War, the west discovered the MiG-15, the first mass-produced jet fighter built in the Soviet Union. This small device entered service at the end of 1950 in its improved version, the MiG-15bis, and in turn was quickly deployed to Korea where, with its powerful armament and handling, it was an unpleasant surprise for the forces of the United Nations, after finding their air superiority with the arrival of the latest version of the famous F-86 Sabre. While the “bundle” – a nickname given by NATO to the MiG-15 – was barely in use, MiG conceived its successor, the more efficient and wing modified MiG-17 (“Fresco”). The type was withdrawn from service in the USSR in the late sixties, however it had great success abroad. The “Fresco” was the most exported Soviet fighter until the arrival of its indirect successor, MiG-21 (see Planes &amp; Pilots No. 12).

Originally designed to replace another aircraft from the same manufacturer Douglas, the famous Skyraider, the A-4 Skyhawk enjoyed a remarkable career for nearly half a century. It was first the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps who utilized this aircraft extensively, with the many squadrons labeled " Scooter " it’s quasi-official nickname. The two branches implemented them especially during the Vietnam War before transforming them into “aggressors” within the core of the training units. In total, nearly 3000 Skyhawks were constructed until 1979, when manufacturing was terminated, while the success of the delta wing and the smaller dimensions went beyond the borders of the United States, with only seven other nations employing it in the world. Among these is Israel, whose A-4 made its debut during the Yom Kippur War in 1973 and which was only retired from service in 2008. More recently the A-4 was used in Argentina, where the Skyhawk won several successes against the British forces during the Falklands War in 1982.

Text in French.Created in 1949 by ten European countries, joined later by Canada and the United States, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was originally intended to federate the defense means of the signatories, in the context of the beginning of the Cold War, just after the Berlin blockade. Setting up this alliance meant the weapons of the member countries and especially their air forces were very rapidly modernized, especially under the aegis of the United States, the only country at the time to have a nuclear weapon, the indispensable prerequisite for all dissuasion. In the following decades several nations joined NATO, whereas France decided to go it alone and, on the contrary, leave NATO and ensure its own defense. The disappearance of the USSR then the Warsaw Pact in the 1990s meant the role of the Alliance had to be reviewed, because it had lost its main adversary and raison d'être. Meanwhile it started to take part in various external operations, and a certain number of countries from the former Eastern Bloc gradually began joining it. In this 300+ page book, the fighting planes of each NATO country's air force, be they a founder member or a new member, are presented in detail, the nations being classified by alphabetical order, which gives a very complete panorama of the machines in operation and the camouflage systems and markings used, notably thanks to more than 600 profiles and about 300 period photographs.
