Davey Simpson, a fisherman, is charged with the murder of a powerful Alabama politician's son. His childhood friend, Ben Johnson, is well-qualified to act as his attorney, but Ben would have to resign as the first black lieutenant governor of Alabama to take the case. Since he can't endure living in the present, he lives in the past, recalling memories of his two childhood friends --his lost love, Pokey, and his best friend, Ben. Even though those memories are also a reminder that Ben and Pokey both moved away from Mobile, they allow Davey to escape the unbearable loneliness of incarceration. Years before, when Ben was shunned and mistreated because of his race, Davey stood up for him. Now, despite Davey's protests, Ben insists on representing Davey. Though they had been separated by time and space, loyalty prevails. However, it is Davey's plight that causes childhood friends to reunite and renew their relationships. Unexpected twists reveal the many complications involved in the case and in Davey's personal life as well. This book was awarded Second Place in the Sandhill Writer's Conference for Novels in 2009. One of the judges, Milam McGraw Propst, author of Adventures of Ociee Nash (also a movie), expressed her "high regard for this manuscript." She compared it to The Help saying, "It is writing from the same heart." Calling the work amazing, she said she "loves these three characters; most especially Pokey and her triumph" adding that "these beautifully drawn, rich memories of the South bring back a place and time we all need to remember."

The Callings refers not only to the call of a man to the priesthood, but also to the call of the devil to a drug–using teenager who commits matricide, the call of the wild to keep a teacher on the chenieres where her ancestors settled, and the call of an author who feels compelled to write about the crime.

In this era of advanced technology keeping students' attention often becomes difficult. Teachers need to find new ways to create interest. In writing classes, choosing a topic that involves students is a priority. A new genre, Tourism Writing, is an innovative and effective means of teaching students composition. It can fill this need. Tourism Writing focuses on a particular place or event, provides photos and information on nearby points of interest, and directly invites visitors. This book provides an understanding of how Tourism Writing benefits people in all areas of life. This transfers to classroom assignments when students are asked to write a poem in this genre and they are given lists of possible topics, but they also have the option to choose their own place or event. It becomes a learning experience as many are amazed at their ability to write a poem and intrigued by the history they learn while researching and they treasure their photos used for illustration. Such poems were entered in the annual Poetry Writing Contest at Faulkner University. In the process, students' communication and research skills were enhanced. They learned the history of their own area. This hands-on process is rewarding to teach. The plan is to add prose assignments on Tourism Writing to the classroom curriculum in the future. The possibilities for Tourism Writing are widespread.

This story is based on events that have since become folklore in Mobile, Alabama. It is about a nineteen-year-old printer, Charles R.S. Boyington, who was unjustly convicted and hanged for killing his best friend in 1835. During this period, the overwhelming majority of the people of Mobile considered all individuals as either God-fearing or evil, without exception. After learning of Boyington's atheistic beliefs, the court of public opinion swung toward him as the guilty party. Exacerbated with knowledge of his checkered past and his inconsistent testimonies, the people gave more weight to the flimsy circumstantial evidence against him. All this coalesced in working up the citizenry into such a state of frenzy that it served to strangle any impartially that they otherwise might have had. The heightened public outrage frightened off any potential witnesses for the defense and biased the jurors and judges to a point that the legal process turned into a sham, with a guilty verdict a foregone conclusion. Boyington's articulation skills and obvious intelligence meant little in the abatement of these preformed prejudices. Convicted by an unqualified jury in 1834 using only circumstantial evidence, he was shackled in Mobile's first jail in 1834 where he wrote poetry to his fiancee to survive. As he predicted would happen to prove his innocence, a tree grew on his gravesite and still stands 175 years later in the Church St. Graveyard.
