A landmark survey that illuminates through paintings, pastels, and photographs how Georgia O'Keeffe discovered and refined her approach to nature at Lake George From 1918 until the early 1930s, Georgia O’Keeffe lived for part of the year on Alfred Stieglitz’s family estate at Lake George, New York. O'Keeffe and Stieglitz stayed there from spring until fall, and she reveled in the discovery of new subject matter. She found respite in the bucolic setting, and in her studio, nicknamed “the shanty,” she could concentrate on her work without the distractions of city life and the Stieglitz clan that congregated at the lake in the summer months. The Lake George retreat provided the basic material for her art, while evoking the spirit of place that was essential to O’Keeffe’s modern approach to the natural world. This book, and the exhibition it accompanies, examines the extraordinary body of work O’Keeffe created there, from magnified botanical compositions of the flowers and vegetables she grew in her garden to a group of remarkable still lifes of the apples and pears that she picked. O’Keeffe became fascinated with the variety of trees that grew there, and they were the subject of at least twenty-five compositions. Architectural subjects emerged as a theme, as did a number of panoramic landscape paintings and bold, color-filled abstractions. During this highly productive period, O’Keeffe created more than two hundred paintings on canvas and paper in addition to sketches and pastels, making the Lake George years among the most prolific and transformative of her seven-decade career. 124 illustrations, 84 in color

Lawren S. Harris is best known for his iconic landscape paintings that declare a sense of cool Canadian resilience. Yet, in the 1920s, an audacious and more colourful interior world began to emerge in his work, and by 1934, the patriotic landscape painter had taken a seemingly unexpected turn toward a transnational career in abstract painting. The social, intellectual, and aesthetic milieu of American transcendentalism shaped a movement of abstract art across North America, seen in the paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, Katherine Dreier, Raymond Jonson, and Lawren Harris. Harris, in particular, made an impact on both sides of the border. Inspired by the ideas of Kandinsky and informed by the writings of Emerson and Whitman, Harris and his contemporaries turned to abstraction to express higher states of consciousness, creating work that was the very embodiment of the modern spirit. As Harris's career progressed, as he ascended from mountaintops to inner states of mind, he sought greater and more ethereal spiritual heights. This magnificent volume features reproductions of more than 75 paintings by Harris and his contemporaries. Two major essays by Roald Nasgaard and Gwendolyn Owens investigate Lawren Harris's exploration of modernity and the evolution of his work towards a form of abstraction that enthusiastically embraced the energies of the ambient visual culture. Higher States: Lawren Harris and His American Contemporaries accompanies an exhibition organized by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection that will open in February 2017, and travel to the Glenbow Museum in Calgary in October 2017.

Painting Lake George, 1774-1900 explores in depth the extraordinary paintings that depict the famously beautiful Adirondack resort community. 
 In the tradition of recent explorations of landscape paintings distinguished by place, this lavishly illustrated book investigates why paintings of the "Queen of American lakes," as it was known in the nineteenth century, became popular: what characteristics separated them from other landscape views, who bought them, and how they were understood by the public. The compendium of accompanying information presents the range of the documented paintings, even paintings lost or destroyed, surviving only in records of their titles and artists. It serves to enhance our understanding of the range of artists and interpretations of the lake.

Gordon Matta-Clark (1943–78) died at only 35 of pancreatic cancer and has since become a cult figure of late 20th-century art. Trained in architecture at Cornell, he went on to question the field’s conventions in vivid projects―performance and recycling pieces, space and texture works and word games―some of which excised holes into existing buildings or assembled deeds to New York City alleys and curbs. The artist used a variety of media to document his work, including film, video and photography. His work and words, while sophisticated enough to make him an "artist’s artist," and colossal and outgoing enough to draw public attention and affection, were always also grounded in social or political convictions. In the early 1970s, Matta-Clark developed the idea of "anarchitecture," which encompassed his interest in voids, gaps and left-over spaces.
