In recent years, occupational therapy practice with older adults has rapidly grown as a result of the demographic trends toward an aging population as well as increased longevity among people with chronic disabling condition. At the same time, research within the outside the profession affirms that occupational engagement is significant to the health and well-being of older adults.

Since Occupational Therapy Assessment Tools was first published in 1989, the number of assessments applicable to occupational therapy profiled in each succeeding edition has doubled. Nearly 400 instruments are reviewed in this new edition, including many developed by occupational therapists. Since Cultural Competency for Health Professionals was first published in 2000, much has changed in the world. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, have resulted in increased suspicion in the United States and around the world of people of Arab descent.
