Christened the New World, Latin America represented a new beginning for Spanish colonists. In fact, the discovery of Latin America was only part of a continuing, worldwide search for new resources: fertile land, precious metals, and slave labor. Nevertheless, this idealized image of Latin America continues to dominate interpretations of “natives,” who are transformed into marginalized, romanticized figures, either unusually wise or wildly heroic. Transatlantic Translations refigures Latin American narratives outside of this standard postcolonial framework of victimization and resistance. Julio Ortega traces the ways in which Latin America has been represented through the works of many “native speakers,” including Juan Rulfo, Gabriel García Márquez, and Juan Maria Gutierrez. Language, Ortega reveals, was not solely a way for colonizers to indoctrinate and civilize; instead, it gave Latin Americans the means to tell their own history. Spanning literatures from the early modern period to the present day, the essays in Transatlantic Translations demonstrate the rich history of shared language between old and new worlds.

El análisis y una inteligente lectura de la bibliografía existente por parte de Ortega da como reusltado una de las más completas interpretaciones de esa obra póstuma de Vallejo. 
Una de las propuestas nuevas que aquí presenta Ortega es la de la "tachadura" como uno de los principales recursos de Vallejo. Al corregir sus poemas, el poeta eliminaba las palabras que les daban contexto y hasta los vínculos lógicos. "No perseguía expresar mejor las cosas gracias a la concentración del lenguaje, sino decir menos de lo que el lenguaje dice? lo fundamental era la posibilidad de desrepresentar". Vallejo fue cada vez más radical en el uso de esta técnica (presente ya en Los heraldos negros), como se puede comprobar en muchos de sus poemas póstumos. 
Pero la principal contribución de César Vallejo. La escritura del devenir está en sus capítulos finales, dedicados a hacer un detallado estudio de España, Aparta de mí este cáliz (poemario escrito en 1937), en el que se revisan documentos de la época (revistas literarias que circularon durante la Guerra Civil española) y hasta se recoge el testimonio de escritores vinculados al poeta peruano en aquellos años. A ello se suma el análisis deconstructivo de Ortega, y una inteligente lectura de la bibliografía existente. Todo ello da como resultado una de las más completas interpretaciones de esa obra póstuma de Vallejo.
