Only 19 years of age, Joseph F. Smith was returning from his four-year mission to Hawaii. Camped near San Bernardino, California, breakfast was being prepared while Joseph was away gathering more wood for the fire. A gang of ruffians were on the look-out for wagon trains giving passage to any Mormon heading north. As they neared the encampment, Joseph unknowingly walked back into the camp alone. The leader confronted Joseph demanding, &#8220;Are you a blanketty-blank Mormon?&#8221; The young Joseph looked him straight in the eye and declared, &#8220;Yes, siree; dyed in the wool; true blue, through and through!&#8221; Astonished, the desperadodropped his hands to his sides and muttered, &#8220;Well, you are the blanketty-blank pleasantest man I ever met!&#8221; As a five-year old boy, he saw the wailing of all Nauvoo at the death of his father and the Prophet Joseph Smith. He saw the resoluteness of his mother in crossing the plains three years later. What could these men do? Such was the faith and fortitude of the boy that grew to be the sixth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Orson Ferguson Whitney was a poet, historian, journalist, academic, and Apostle. He was born in Salt Lake City, and began his career as a writer at the Deseret News. While on a mission to England, he served as edictor for the Millennial Star. He taught English and theology at Brigham Young College in Logan, Utah, before becoming Assistant Church Historian in 1899. He was called to the Quorum of the Twelve in 1906.
