In this book, Dr. O'Brien extends his thesis, begun in A Hidden Phase of American History, that numerous Irishmen participated in the American Revolution, by demonstrating that the Irish were represented in the American colonies from the beginning of the colonial period. The author has combed through passenger lists, tax lists, marriage records, church records, and military records, as well as secondary sources such as James Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of New England, to unearth a plethora of references to persons of Irish birth or descent among the colonists of New England. Thus in one instance the author has located Cormac Annis from Enniskillen, Ireland in Newbury, Massachusetts in 1666; in another it is Charles McCarthy, one of the founders of East Greenwich, Rhode Island; and in still another we find two Irishmen named Bryan prospering as merchants in Connecticut in the 17th century. Here is a list of Irish soldiers who took part in King William's War; there is a list of Irish settlers in York County, Maine; everywhere there are references to persons of stated or inferred Irish heritage. O'Brien has even found a witch of Irish origin, one Ann Glover who was sentenced and hanged for practicing witchcraft in 1688. Appended to the body of the volume are two alphabetically arranged lists of New England's Irish in the 17th and 18th centuries, giving the individual's name, the town where the record may be found, and the date of the record. Finally, the complete name index to the work makes it simple to find any of the more than 2,000 New England Irish referred to throughout the volume.

This book explains the deep influence of biological methods and theories on the practice of Americanist archaeology by exploring W. C. McKern's use of Linnaean taxonomy as the model for development of a pottery classification system. 
By the early 20th century, North American archaeologists had found evidence of a plethora of prehistoric cultures displaying disparate geographic and chronological distributions. But there were no standards or algorithms for specifying when a culture was distinct or identical to another in a nearby or distant region. 
Will Carleton McKern of the Milwaukee Public Museum addressed this fundamental problem of cultural classification beginning in 1929. He modeled his solution—known as the Midwestern Taxonomic Method—on the Linnaean biological taxonomy because he wanted the ability to draw historical and cultural "relationships" among cultures. McKern was assisted during development of the method by Carl E. Guthe, Thorne Deuel, James B. Griffin, and William Ritchie. 
This book studies the 1930s correspondence between McKern and his contemporaries as they hashed out the method's nuances. It compares the several different versions of the method and examines the Linnaean biological taxonomy as it was understood and used at the time McKern adapted it to archaeological problems. Finally, this volume reveals how and why the method failed to provide the analytical solution envisioned by McKern and his colleagues and how it influenced the later development of Americanist archaeology.

The ideals of Louis Sullivan underpin the revolutionary architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. As Sullivan's assistant, Wright spent many hours drawing and discussing the architectural ornament that was, for Sullivan, the clearest medium for the expression of his ideas. This series of volumes is intended to visually present the majority of surviving ornament designed by and under the direction of Louis Sullivan. This first volume presents the ornament between 1881 and 1887. As subsequent volumes are added, it is my hope that the immersed reader will be able to discern propositions underlying the ornament, and detect the patterns and structures that developed into the Prairie architecture of Wright. Michael O'Brien is an architect and the Associate Head of the Department of Architecture at Texas A&M University. He is the former William E. Jamerson Professor of Building Construction in the Myers-Lawson School of Construction at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. He is a native of Chicago and a graduate of North Dakota State University. Professor O'Brien has been a guest curator at the National Building Museum, an advisor and on-screen expert for the Discovery Channel, and has numerous publications and research reports on Industrializing the Residential Construction Site for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
