Place, Time and Being in Japanese Architecture

This work examines built forms which, by actively celebrating a particular place, time or pattern of material being, seem able in a number of ways to enhance our experience of existence. In addition to highlighting the transcultural human benefits of such environments, Place, Time and Being in Japanese Architecture also illustrates generally applicable strategies for revealing these universal parameters in built forms. It is suggested that greater use of such techniques could not only help to sustain environmental and cultural identities against the homogenizing effects of globalization, but can also heighten our appreciation of the peculiar condition 'being here now.'

Frank Lloyd Wright's admiration for traditional Japanese pictorial art is well known, as is his insistence that neither the art nor the architecture of Japan had any direct influence on his own work. This book examines the evidence that quite apart from their philosophical lessons certain forms of Japanese art and architecture did in fact have a significant impact on Wright's early work, and one which may cast new light on his general approach to design. More specifically, the study sets out to explain Wright's particular perception of traditional Japanese art and architecture in terms of his own 'organic' design principles. And by illustrating how he brought together disparate forms and ideas in new creative syntheses it attempts to clarify the nature of his artistic originality. Eight primary channels of influence, from woodblock prints to publications and individual buildings are examined in detail, and the evidence of their impact on Wright's written and built work is illustrated through a combination of textual and graphic analyses.

The Constructed Other: Japanese Architecture in the Western Mind: Japanese Architecture in the Western Mind

The Constructed Other argues that the assumed otherness of Japanese architecture has made it both a testbed for Western architectural theories and a source of inspiration for Western designers. The book traces three recurring themes in Western accounts of Japanese architecture from the reopening of Japan in the mid-nineteenth century to the present day: a wish to see Western architectural theories reflected in Japanese buildings; efforts to integrate elements of Japanese architecture into Western buildings; and a desire to connect contemporary Japanese architecture with Japanese tradition. It is suggested that, together, these narratives have had the effect of creating what amounts to a mythical version of Japanese architecture, often at odds with historical fact, but which has exercised a powerful influence on the development of building design internationally.
